Her confessional songwriting, on stage and media antics, social consciousness and raw energy has propelled her to superstardom. Pink is the Janis Joplin of the Internet generation with some Madonna thrown in for good measure. Her pop/rock sound from the sophomore effort allowed her to distance herself from the media hungry emptiness of teen pop; even ridiculing them with her song Stupid Girls.

Funhouse with Pink
Pink has transcended from being just another teen idol RnB singer to full fledged adult contemporary rock queen.
But it was Pink's ironically titled Funhouse about her separation from her husband which made the world sit up and listen. Her "open letter" to the then President George W. Bush is considered a triumph and even though it might not be taken too serious, Pink has vowed never to release it a single to devalue it.
Her ever changing hair color and style is a deliberate effort to match the silliness which goes with Video generations. Pink has sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide and her global tours have given her widespread attention popularity. Her 2009 Funhouse World Tour sold over 100 million dollars in ticket sales cementing her solo rock star status.
The Teen Idol
The Pennsylvania native was born as Alecia Beth Moore. She always wanted to be a rock star right from a very early age. Her biggest influences were Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Bette Midler and Madonna. While in her teens she also thought about pursuing alternate careers of a gymnast and skate boarder. At age 16 she joined the all-girl band Choice. The band signed to LaFace Records released one single but quickly disbanded. Alecia now calling herself Pink stayed with the label.
Her debut effort was produced by label owner Babyface titled "Can't Take Me Home". It reached no. 26 on the US charts and only after relentless touring has the album sales increased and the latest figures suggest it has sold over 2 million copies in the US. The music was RnB and pop, but raunchy attitude in her songwriting showed early signs of the rebel in her. In early 2001 she collaborated with Christina Aguilera,
Lil' Kim and Mya to release the Grammy award winning "Lady Marmalade"
Transformation
But Pink did not want to record another pop sounding, hip-hop styled album; she changed her songwriting style by collaborating with Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes. The second album is considered more of a transition; "Misundaztood" had the pop feel but there were simple rock tunes as well. The album with its videos and heavy promotion became a huge hit, selling 5 million copies in the US alone. It had the up-tempo number "Let's Get the Party Started" but there were songs about divorce, the Vietnam War and teenage drug use. She went on her first headlining "Party Tour" which was basically club and amphitheaters. She also opened for Lenny Kravitz
The 2003 "Try This" album was a commercial disappointment. It had been produced in collaboration with Punk band Rancid's lead singer Tim Armstrong. The writing was not thought through. The album also received a lot of highly critical reviews. The Try This tour did not have a US date and was mostly a European and Australian affair.
Die Hard!
In 2006 Pink released "I'm Not Dead", a defiantly titled album after the backlash of her third album. This time the music was more cohesive with a strong emphasis on songwriting. The album was her feisty look at the pop culture and contained some of the best songs she had ever written. The overall feel of the album was alternative pop/rock. Pink's Stupid Girl" song about the teeny pop and media celebrity world was an attack on the Britney's and Paris's of the world. She also parodied them in the video. But it was the "Dear Mr. President" which showed the incredible intellectual depth in songwriting. A challenge to the President of United State became anthem during her arena tour. Pink had gained back the lost ground from her previous work.
The ensuing tour was now playing to larger crowds and sing-along feel to show. Pink was ever more confident and sure of her place in the music industry. Pink played sold out shows across Europe and even played a gig in Dubai. The album has been certified platinum and Pink was enjoying the attention she was getting.
Her fifth album "Funhouse" cemented her place in rock music. Her open confessional songwriting about her impending divorce was a revelation. The song "So What" captured the same essence as Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. The song praised critically and the video featuring her husband received heavy rotation on MTV and VH1. There was vulnerable side in songs like "Sober" and "Please Don't Leave Me"
Pink had now become a bona-fide international superstar. Even though the album only sold a million copies in the US, internationally it has sold over 17 million. In fact in Australia is one of the biggest selling albums of all times. Her Funhouse World tour was sold out playing all across the world.
Pink has announced a European tour in 2010 playing several festivals.
