The Formation
Vocalist Thomas Mars, guitar player Christian Mazzalai and Bassist Deck d'Arcy started jamming together. In 1995, Laurent Brancowitz joined the band after his band Darlin had folded. The band started touring the Paris bar circuit, playing mostly cover songs of Prince, Rolling Stones and other artists. The even went on a tour of France playing small theaters and clubs. In 1997, they finally started calling themselves "Phoenix". Thomas Mars started to shape the music of the band by focusing on electronic based rock. He wanted to create a unique sound which would be different from the music being played in France. He was also very determined to break into US and UK markets through touring and making creative albums.
The Start of Phoenix
They recorded their first single called "Ghettoblaster" and released it locally in Paris. The band was immediately signed to a Paris based record company called Source Records. The management at the record label was able to get Phoenix and label artist Air for a UK TV shows. Phoenix even remixed one of Air's songs. After a few more short tours in Europe and specifically France, the band recorded their debut album and released it 2000. The album "United" had two singles "If I feel Better" and
