Pearl Jam – From Seattle Grunge To Arena Rockers

“I don't need drugs to make my life tragic” – Eddie Vedder

Pearl Jam Legacy

They outlived all the other bands from the 90s taking grunge music to stadiums and arenas. As a band true to the spirit of rock n’ roll, they stopped releasing videos or promotional events. They have done everything they could dismantle their own fame. Yet they have sold 60 million albums world wide and have one of the most dedicated fans for a rock band. Along with fellow Seattle grunge rockers Nirvana, they help take the genre to mainstream and then chopped it down with experimentation, socially conscious songwriting and the intently passionate live shows. Pearl Jam that has been one of the architect of the modern alternative rock movement.

The Seattle History

Guitar players Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard had already been pioneers of the grunge genre before singer Eddie Vedder joined them in 1990. They also included Mike McCready on lead guitar as well. They have had several drummers in their 20 year career – currently the position is held by Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron. They signed to Epic records the same year and started playing local clubs and events in Seattle. They debut their first album “Ten” released in Aug 1991. At its root, the music was more classic rock using grunge influences. The bands extended touring and the videos ensured the slow selling album reached No.2 on the US Album charts. The video for “Jeremy” won several awards. The album has sold 25 million copies worldwide.

The Success Continues

The massive success and constant touring made Pearl Jam rock superstars. This mainstream fame made the band uncomfortable. Their second album “Vs” in 1993 sold a nearly a million copies in its first week of release, eventually selling 12 million worldwide. The band toured and recorded music during the break in tours to release the debut No.1 Album “Vitalogy” which also sold around 10 million copies worldwide.

“Spin the Black Circle” from the album won them a Grammy Award for best hard rock performance. Since 1990, the band was constantly recording out touring which took a toll and fractured relationships

The next two albums “No Code” and “Yield” were platinum sellers which were break away from their usual rock sound and were more experimental. The album “Binaural”
in 2000 and “Riot Act” in 2002 were both certified Gold. Pearl

The Elder Statesman

By the 2000 decade the band were the elder statesmen of the alt rock movement increasingly moving towards more rock oriented sound. Pearl Jam continued to tour globally and was easily one of the biggest live rock acts. After a 4 year gap they released the self titled Pearl Jam and returned to the top of the charts with “Backspacer” in 2009.
