Early Life
Paul Wall was born Paul Slayton in Houston, Texas. He started studying at the University of Houston He started rapping on a radio show along with fellow rapper Chamillionaire and their performance was released as a mix tape in 1999. This sudden and improvised freestyle rapping gained a lot of popularity. It gained major attraction and the radio station would often call the duo together to perform their free style raps on air. The duos were signed with Swishahouse records.
They started calling themselves The Color Changing Click. The mix tapes continued to gain major ground that also lead to an offer for recording a full fledged album with Pay in Full records. The album “Get Ya Mind Correct” would go on to sell an astonishing 200,000 copies. This unexpected success prompted the band to record several mix tapes. Chamillionaire chose to stay on with Pay in Full records while Paul Wall returned to Swishahouse Records
Breaking Through
Paul Wall released his first solo album in 2005 called “The People’s Champ”. The album gained major US attention and it debut No.1 on the US Album charts. Several singles also charted in the US. The album has been certified platinum in the US. He had quickly become the most important and highest selling artist at the Swishahouse records. The single “Girl” peaking at no. 35 on the US Hot 100 singles was one of his most famous tunes.
The Sophomore
In 2007 Paul Wall released his second album title “Get Money Stay True”. It was a reached No.1 on the Rap album charts and No.8 on the US Album charts. Produced by Jermaine Dupri who has worked with several superstar artists like Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey and Will Smith; the album was not a commercial hit and received mixed reviews. As a marketing tool the album was released only on Target Store with a DVD documentary.
The Fast Life
After collaborating with other artists and also a nationwide tour, Paul Wall started recording his third album. Prior to recording the album Paul Wall became friends with the Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. Barker would help in producing the third album “Fast Life”. Released in May 2009, the album was different in its style and songwriting however it could not manage to pull off any major singles and therefore it is regarded as a commercial disappointment.
