Big Talent
In May of 1944 in Philadelphia, Patricia Louise Holt was born. As a little girl Patti began to sing in her church choir. In 1959, as recommended by a teacher she formed an all girl group. The Ordettes went through several young girls, LaBelle always being a constant. Patti LaBelle’s mother allowed her to drop out of high school to go on tour with the rest of the girls.
The girls went for a record deal. They changed Patricia’s name to Pattie LaBelle and changed the name of the group to Patti Labelle and the Bluebells.
Group Success
In 1962, the groups’ first single, I Sold My Heart to the Junkman peaked to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group saw a handful of top 40 hits. They covered songs such as Danny Boy and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
They found themselves at Atlantic Records, covering Somewhere Over the Rainbow. In the 1960s, the group toured in England. After being dropped from the label and picking up a new manager, they were advised to revive their group and sound. They went back to America and changed their name to Labelle. From there, they signed up with Warner Bros. Records and released a self titled album. Throughout the years, they continued to change looks and sounds to keep up with the changing times.
In 1974, the group released Nightbirds, in the album Lady Marmalade became the very first #1 hit for the group. With just a couple other album releases the girls finally decided to call it quits and become solo artists in 1977.
Solo
In 1977, LaBelle signed on with Epic Records and released a self titled album. Along with this, she released four other albums and did work in plays. She saw very little commercial success with these efforts. Then, in 1982, she received her first solo Grammy nomination with The Best is Yet to Come.
She did not see commercial success until 1983. I’m in Love Again became her first charted album. After this, success followed LaBelle. In 1985, she was given a television special, her first. The following year, she released her bestselling album to date. This album, Winner in You gave her her first #1 solo song, On My Own. In 1991, LaBelle won her first Grammy for her Burnin’ album.
In addition to singing, Patti also tried her hand at acting with recurring roles in sitcoms.
