An unlikely reality TV star with his hit MTV show The Osbourne which started a trend on American television. Ozzy is considered the Godfather of Heavy Metal
Beyond Black Sabbath
Ozzy Osbourne was born in Aston, Birmingham in England. He auditioned and joined the band Black Sabbath in 1968. He achieved massive success as the lead singer for the heavy metal band The Black Sabbath. He left the band by 1979 after uncontrollable drug and alcohol addictions.
After sometime in rehab he released his first album 1980 titled “Blizzard of Ozz” reaching No. 21 on the US album charts. The album has sold over 4 million copies in the US. He followed it up with release of “Diary of a Madman” in 1981 which was again a commercial hit cracking the US Top 20 and eventually selling 2 million albums. Ozzy’s friend and his bands guitar player Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982. The event completely shook Ozzy.
The 80s and 90s
Ozzy would often schedule his album releases pre-empting the release of his former band Black Sabbath. He released “Bark at the Moon” which was also a hit album selling 3 million copies. The “Ultimate Sin” in 1986 was slammed critically but it still manage to a be multi-platinum hit. “No Rest for the Wicked” continued his charting success and it sold 2 million copies.
In 1992 Ozzy released what many consider his greatest solo album – titled “No More Tears” with the ballad “Mama, I’m Coming Home” which was a major hit. The album went on to sell to crack the Top 10 US Album chart and sell 7 million copies worldwide.
In 1995 he released “Ozzmosis” featuring the hit single “Perry Mason”. The album and tour were hugely successful. Around 1996 due to problems with the tour promoters Ozzy and his wife Sharon (Ozzies Manager) started the Ozzfest. Over the course of 12 years of the festival it has played to 5 million people and grossed $100 million in ticket sales.
He reunited with his band the Black Sabbath for a headline act on the 1997 Ozzfest. His last two albums “Down to Earth” in 2001 and “Black Rain” have not been major commercial hits. However he plans to tour in 2010 headlining Ozzfest
