Actually finally having an album out is such a relief. [We were] kind of at that breaking point. If can just get past this point in our musical career… that would be great for us. Then the album came out and it just keeps skyrocketing. We’re like, ‘Wow!’
A Slow Start
OneRepublic was formed in 2002, brought together by songwriter, Ryan Tedder, who initially contacted a high school friend, Zach Filkins, to create the band. They were signed with Columbia Records, but two and a half years later, when their debut record was ready for release, Columbia dropped them from their label. This would have been the end of the band, except for MySpace. Over the years, OneRepublic had been posting singles on their page, and the response had been exceptional. They became the number one unsigned act on MySpace.
Their MySpace activity caught the attention of several recording companies, including Justin Timberlake's Timbaland Mosley Music Group. OneRepublic became the first rock band to sign with Timberlake's organization. By now, the band had already accrued a fan base solely from their activities on the social networking site.
Success with Timbaland
The band finally released their album, Dreaming Out Loud, in 2007. Their first release, Apologize, was remixed and re-released by Timberlake on his album, Shock Value. The song went to #1 on the Billboard Top 40 and received the most airplay in the history of the Top 40 with 10,331 radio plays per week. The song has sold over 3 million downloads. The demand for mp3 versions of the song has been unrelenting.
The second single from the album, Stop and Stare, was not the success its predecessor was, but it sold in its own right, reaching #12 on the Hot 100 Chart, and #9 on the Pop 100 Chart. Fans outside of the internet community were now taking notice of the band. The album has sold over 200,000 copies world wide and over 822,000 copies in the United States, certifying the album as gold.
Building on a Solid Foundation
In 2008, OneRepublic toured with Maroon 5 and Brandi Carlile. They performed their single, Apologize live on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance, and on American Idol as a duet with finalist David Archuleta. Their second album, Waking Up, was released in 2008. While it did not replicate the success of the debut effort, the album sold over 90,000 copies in the United States alone.
In 2008 and 2009, OneRepublic has been nominated for eleven awards, including Teens Choice, Grammy's, MuchMusic, and People's Choice. The band is currently on tour in the United Kingdom, and is scheduled to return at the end of May. They continue to maintain a strong following on line, with frequent mp3 download requests for their music.
Did you know . . .
Timberlake's version of Apologize was displaced from the top airplay single by Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love, which had also been written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder.
A re-release of Dreaming Out Loud, only in Australia and New Zealand, includes Timberlake's re-mix of Apologize.
OneRepublic is featured on Leona Lewis' album, Echo, on the single, Lost Then Found.
