England by Heart
Born in Cambridge, England to Brinley Newton John and Irene, Olivia Newton John would go on to delight many in her famous roles on the big screen as well as her solo career with her musically inclined voice. Her family would emigrate for to Australia in 1954 at around the time she was six years old where her father would take on the role of professor of the German language and eventually Master of Ormond College.
Getting Her Start
At the young age of fourteen years old, it is said that Olivia Newton John would form her first all girl band called Sol Four. From this group, she would gain the attention of many local radios where the group would receive numerous slots on the airwaves as well as performing solo in some of the radio shows. An appearance on the Go Show, she would meet Pat Carrol and John Farrar. Farrar would later become her husband. Olivia would go on to release her first single called Till You Say You’ll Be Mine. John would also win an award on the radio show Sing Sing Sing, in which she was rewarded with a trip to England although she had to be coerced into using the prize by her mother.
From this trip, Olivia Newton John would repeatedly try to come home; however, her mother would not allow it and this led to her joining with Pat Caroll, whom she began touring in the numerous night clubs around Europe. From this touring, John gained the attention of Don Kirshner, creator of the Monkees, who would recruit her to sing in the group called Toomorow. Although they all had good intentions, the group was not very well accepted and would break up shortly after its inception.
Solo Career
Her first solo album was eventually release in 1971 called If Not for You, which became her first international hit. The song was originally recorded by the Beatle’s George Harrison. She followed up with an album called Banks of the Ohio, which was a hit in England and Australia but did not fair as well in the United States. Although John first started out singing more of a pop culture style, her next songs reverted to more of a country music manner. This was not pleasing to some in the United States as they did not think that someone outside of the United States should be singing country music.
Newton John would eventually leave England and head to the United States where she would continue to work on her musical career. During this time she would start to get the attention of the acting associations. She would go on to release the album Hope You Never Been Mellow, which contained two singles that would go to number one. She would go on to release a few more albums that would top the pop and country music charts although her singing career would begin to plateau and take a dip after these albums were released.
