Nivea Hamilton, known simply as Nivea, is an American hip hop/rap artist.  She was born in Georgia and was first exposed to music during her years singing with her church choir.  Nivea began her recording career in 2000 when she made a guest appearance rapper Mystikal's 2000 single, Danger (Been So Long).

Nivea Hamilton, known simply as Nivea, is an American hip hop/rap artist.  She was born in Georgia and was first exposed to music during her years singing with her church choir.  Nivea began her recording career in 2000 when she made a guest appearance rapper Mystikal's 2000 single, Danger (Been So Long).  

Her debut solo single followed shortly after.  Don't Mess with the Radio was released on 2001, and her second single, Don't Mess with My Man came out a year later.  The latter peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  These singles were released as teasers for her upcoming album, and were made available on line as well as in stores.  Fans could stream the music for free or purchase an mp3 dowload.  The growing interest and demand with these songs made the fans more anxious to hear the album when it was released.

Building on a Foundation

Her first album, Nivea, was released at the end of 2002.  The first single, which had been pre-released, Don't Mess with the Radio had been a dismal failure, but the the following singles, Don't Mess with my Man, and Laundromat, which she recorded with R. Kelly were hits and turned the album around and made it successful.

Her follow-up album, Complicated, was released in 2004.  The album peaked at #37 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #9 on the Billboard Top R&B/Rap chart.  It was critically acclaimed but would prove to be her least successful effort commercially.  Her 2006 release, Animalistic, was released only in Japan.  The plan had been to release it to the United States in 2007, but that plan was later scrapped.

Present and Future

Nivea's next album, Purple Heart, is due to be released some time in 2010.  The tracks have already been made available and a video has been released for the upcoming release, Love Hurts, which features Lil' Wayne.  Her music has fared well on line, as well as in the stores, according to Soundscan.  Her singles have consistently appeared on the digital charts during and after their releases.  She recenlty recorded a mixtape called Say Something with Rasheeda.

In 2004, Nivea married rapper Terius (The-Dream) Nash.  He produced a large portion of each album she released during her marriage.  The two divorced in 2007.  Nash implied that he had  abused or had been tempted to abuse Nivea and was leaving before he made it worse.  The two have two children together; she has customdy of them.

Did you know . . .

1. In November of 2009, Nivea gave birth to a baby boy.  His father is rapper Lil Wayne, who is right now being incarcerated for carrying a concealed weapon and for possession of narcotics.

2. Don' Mess with My Man earned a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Duo or group with vocals in 2003.

3. Her first album, Nivea, was voted the Hottest Album of the Year for 2002 and 2003.
