Nas – Street Rap Professor

“I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death” - Nas

Dangerous Songwriter

Nas is one of the most unique Rap starts of the last two decades. He has created a cinematic imagery through his songwriting which is quite potent and evocative. Nas is also known for his outspokenness which has landed him in trouble on numerous occasions. His 9 albums have sold nearly 12 million copies in North America.

Early Life

Nas was born in Brooklyn in New York City. He began writing at the age of 9 and by the time he was in his teens he had dropped out of school. By 1991, based on his performances he had already gained the tag of child protégé and by 1992 he signed with Columbia Records. After collaborating with other artists he debut with his solo album in 1994 titled Illmatic. The album was given a rousing welcome by the rap community and the press, though commercially not a huge hit at the time of release it created a lot of buzz for the artist and has eventually sold a million copies.

The Nas Mafioso

In 1996 he returned with a US No. album and one of his biggest hits ever titled “It was Written”. The album featured the single “If I Ruled the World (imagine that) which had Lauryn Hill on vocals. The album has sold 2 million copies in the US alone. It was Rap’s first big concept album where Nas experimented with his Mafioso character called Nas Escobar.

After a three year gap he returned with “I Am” in 1999 which had Nas on an Egyptian style cover and debut at No.1 on the charts. Despite the more commercial sound which was criticized it did mange to sell 2 million copies. Before the end of the year he released Nastradamus” which was a poorly received album and just about managed to sell a million copies.

3 times Platinum

The next three albums Stillmatic, God’s Son and Street Disciple were all platinum successes but not achieving the cult status of his second release. During this time his much publicized rivalry with Jay-Z started making the rounds in the media.

Though by 2006 he would he would sign Def Jam records releasing “Hip Hop is Dead” a glaring tribute to current plastic music scene was a Gold certified album which debut at No.1 on the Us charts. In 2008 he had his fifth No.1 album on the US simply titled “Untitled”. The album received mixed reviews and was certified Gold.

Despite dropping out of school, he has established a rapper with literature class. And he is able to create a dark reality of the trouble life in the hood.
