Band History
The roots of the band can be traced to 1983 when guitar player Eric Melvin and Fat Mike on bass and vocals started jamming together. They were joined by drummer Erik Sandin and together they started playing local venue in LA. The band also recorded demos before signing to Mystic Records and releasing an EP in 1985. the band continued to releases EPs and also went through line up changes.
The signed with Wassail Records and released their debut album “Liberal Animation”. Though the album failed to charts in the US, it created a lot of stir due to its album cover. The band released their second album in 1989 “S&M Airlines” which again had a girl in a S&M outfit riding on top of a plane.
The Breakthrough
In 1991 they released “Ribbed” but received negative reviews. Their follow-up album “White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean” was hailed as a critical success and even spawned catchy songs that have been played in their concerts over the years.
But it was their fifth album “Punk in Drublic” in 1994 which got NOFX a lot of recognition. It was a year where other punk bands like Green Day broke into he mainstream with their debut album. The album is their biggest commercial success and over the years have sold nearly 1 million copies in the US and Canada. In 1996, “Heavy Petting Zoo” was their first official album to chart, peaking at No. 63 on the charts. The album was more melodic rock then punk sounds.
Keeping Busy
The band released a pure punk album “So Long and Thanks for the Shoes” which was more of the faster punk sound which the bans is recognized for. In 1999 they released a single song EP “The Decline” it is an 18+ minute epic and the longest punk song ever recorded.
Fat Mike created his own record label and released the bands next full-length album “Pump up the Valuum” in 2000. The albums were not commercial success but were considered more for the pure punk fans and in 2003 released an anti-Bush era political album “War on Errorism”. NOFX released a “Wolves in Wolves Clothing” in 2006 and “Coaster” in April 2009 which faired well among their hard core fans
Did You Know: The album “War on Errorism” is an attack on the President George Bush policies – the back of the album cover featured the caption “Some in Texas there is a village without its idiot”
Did You Know: Fat Mike organized a website punkvoter.com and compiled two chart topping albums Rock Against Bush during the 2004 Presidential Elections
Did You Know: In 2008, Fuse TV aired a documentary series called NOFX: Backstage Passport about the world-wide tour.
