Mushroomhead
Mushroomhead is just one of those words that kinda makes it endless. The possibilities are: it can sound psychedelic, or you can, uh, think of it as a phallic symbol - a very sexual thing - or a funny type of name. It leaves a lot to the imagination. You can go anywhere with it. That's kinda where we are with the music. We do not want to get locked into one style.
Cleveland, Ohio
The band Mushroomhead was formed in the city of Cleveland, Ohio as a group of musicians that were playing in other bands. In order to disguise themselves and to the delightment of their fans, the group would wear costumes and masks to hide their appearance. The group would go on to play with industry greats and establish themselves as a group who had musical talents.
First Albums
In 1993, the group Mushroomhead found themselves playing along side of the heavy metal group GWAR, which instantly gained them credibility in the scene of heavy metal although they would not gain much more attention for a couple of years. The group would perform in around the local Ohio area playing in bars and clubs to get their style promoted.
They would establish their own record label called Filthy Hands Records and would self finance the release of their first album. Their debut album, which was self titled Mushroomhead would be released in the year of 1995 and created a more prioritized band in the fact that the founding members would quit their other projects to begin focusing solely on Mushroomhead.
The band would gain what some have called a cult following and release a few more albums under titles such as Superbuick and M3. These would be the last albums that would be paid for through the group and mark the end of the Filthy Hands label. The band would go on to sign with Eclipse Records and release an album titled XX although it would not gain much exposure it would afford them to be signed to a more viable company under Universal Records. With the signing to the record company, the group would begin their rise in power.
Touring and Albums
Being digitally remastered and re released, the album XX would get them the attention of major concert tours and they would start out with Ozzfest in 2002. After finishing the tour, the group would go back into the studio to release the album called XIII, which contained the sing Sun Doesn’t Rise that would be featured on the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack as well as the television show Headbanger’s Ball.
The album would eventually sell around four hundred thousand copies worldwide and make it to the Billboard 200 charts at number forty. They would begin another tour and would and would later sign with Megaforce Records, which would allow them national as well as international distribution of their albums.
The group would go on to headline with bands such as Dope and Nocturne and a tour sponsored by Jagermeister called The Music For Freedom Tour. The tour would end in New Orleans and would be one of the last major acts to play in the city before being hit by Hurricane Katrina.
Present Works
After the tour, the group went back to the studio and released Savior Sorrow in September of 2006. The album would make it to number forty five on the Billboard 200. The album would sale somewhere around twenty five thousand copies. While on tour, the band was filming around the clock and not just the stage performance and back stage. The video would go to show the many antics that went on during the tour. Fans can visit the group’s home page to find more information and possibly be allowed free music downloads.
Did You Know
Some have said that the group’s albums have a sound like other groups; however, it has been pointed out that many of these sounds were not released before Mushroomhead had already released their albums.
