Muse - Working their Way Up

"I'm sure one day we're going to do a Dark Side of the Moon album."

Muse, the trio is from a small town called Teignmouth, Devon. The band has Mathew Bellamy as its lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist. Their bass guitarist is Chris Wolstepholme and the drummer is Dominic Howard.

Muse- Early Days

Mathew had music in his blood from his younger years. His dad was in a band called The Tornadoes, which was the first band from the United Kingdom to grab a US number 1 record. He started playing the piano at the age of 6 and then turned his attention towards guitar playing, when he was 14.

Dominic was interested in being part of a Jazz band when he was still in high school and started playing drums. Chris also had love for the guitar and at an early age, he took lessons. He then moved to learning how to play the drums and finally unto bass. This was the time when he met Dom and Matt.

Battle of Bands

The trio formed a band called Rocket Baby Dolls. They entered the battle of bands competition and they recall it as their first real concert experience. In the midst of all the other pop or funk-pop acts, they were the only rock band to join.

In order to be different in what they did, they came with colors on their faces and were very aggressive in their performance. They ended up winning the band battle and this made a lot of changes within each member, psychologically. They realized that music is a matter of emotion. 'Rocket Baby Doll's was replaced and they came up with the name Muse.

Their Breakthrough

The band was asked to play covers more often as a band. They didn't like playing someone else's music and was determined to come up with their own music. With Taste Media, they were able to release their self titled EP in 1998 called Dangerous. Maverick, Madonna's record label, signed them on Christmas Eve in the fall of 1998.

UNO was the band's first single to be released. This charted and took the number 75 spot. Another single was released called Cave which also became popular. The first album of the band was called Showbiz and was released in October of 1999. More singles were released - Muscle Myseum and Sun burn, which were both successful. The first single to hit the top 40 was Unintended and sold copies worldwide.

Forming Symmetry

Origin of Symmetry was a pathway that led them to a new direction. This second album was a major change, incorporating all they learned while doing gigs and in many different local tours. The change was of course in the right direction and their new album Plug in Baby reached the number 11 spot on Billboard.

A New Era

The Origin Era was released and won the Best British Band award, along with having been nominated for 3 Q awards. In 2002 they had a major world tour and released an EP in France, called Dead Star in your world. The determined band took the podium by winning the 'Best Live Band' at the Kerrang Awards. They sold over 1.3 million copies and 2002 was their most successful period.

Absolution which is produced by Rich Costev was launched in 2003. The album came out at number one in the UK. The track Time is Running Out became top 10. In 2004, they played at Glastonbury Festival and the band later described it as the as "the best gig of our lives". In 2006, Muse came up with their fourth album and was titled Black holes and Revelations. This became No.1 in the U.K and became number nine in the US Billboard 200.

The band gave I Belong to You to New Moon's film sound track in October of 2009.
