Rocky Start
Fraser Kilmister, or better known as Lemmy, was the original member of the band and would go on to be the only lasting original member throughout the band's rock n' roll tenure. Lemmy was a member of the band Hawkwind, unfortunately, he was busted for cocaine at the Canadian border and his firing would eventually ensue. Undetered, Lemmy found the formula he was searching for when he founded the band Motorhead. Troubles would start from the very beginning in 1976 when the band went into turmoil and eventually would settle on three members to begin their rock ' roll career.
The group would see their first single Motorhead off of the self titled album release Motorhead, enjoy a brief moment on the UK Top 40 at number forty three. With the recognition, the band began to open up for Lemmy's old band Hawkwind, and began to gain a small following. The bands first dabble in success was yet to come, but when it came, it came fast. Some of their music may be available as a free music download or at least for internet screening.
Gathering Speed
In September of 1978, Motorhead released their first hit single Louie Louie, which climbed to the UK Singles chart to number sixty eight, but this was the beginning. The band went on tour to promote the singles and their music was starting to gain the attention of both the punk rock and hard rock genres. Their next single titled Overkill, which would eventually be the title of the album, was released in the spring of 1979 and better their last single reaching number thirty nine on the UK charts.
The single and album was followed by a tour in the United Kingdom. The next album release had the hit single Bomber, which was also the title of the album and went to thirty four in the UK. The band would continue supporting tours for their album releases and in 1980 the album The Golden Years would go on to sell more copies than any other album released by Motorhead, which would eventually reach number eight on the UK Singles Charts.
Cruise Control
The band would rock into the 1980's when they would eventually release the album called Ace of Spades. The Ace of Spades single would reach number four in the UK and would prove to be their best ranking as of yet, proving that Motorhead was on its way. The group followed this release with their biggest tour of yet but immediately went back to the studio to record their next album, which would be their first number one album on the UK Albums Charts, and was called No Sleep 'til Hammersmith.
The album featured another hit single titled St. Valentine's Day Massacre, which would reach number five on the UK Singles Charts. From this acclaim, the group got its first break in the United States and toured with an earlier version of Ozzy Osbourne's solo career. Although this tour did nothing but solidify their position as an up and coming new rock group, the band did not achieve anything better than success that they had already seen. Although they were getting their own personal taste of success, as usual, someone in the group becomes unhappy and internal problems would eventually ensue.
Broken Down
The band went back into the studio in 1982 where they hoped to develop and release a new album. The album was released in April of 1982 called Iron Fist, which would make it to number six on the UK Pop Charts, however, one of the band members was on his way out and resigned in the middle of a tour. Clarke did not care for the band covering the song Stand By Your Man, a popular country western tune famous in early country music. His refusal to play the song led to many riffs between band members and his eventual leaving of the group.
Although Clarke had left the band, the group would eventually find another guitarist and release the album Another Perfect Day, in which the band would take on their own tour of the United States to support the album release. The group of Motorhead would continue to play a few more years but could never reset the momentum they once had. The group is considered on the premier heavy metal groups that started the hard rock movement.
