The R&B artist who is mostly known as Monica, was born in 1980 in the city of Atlanta in the suburb of College Park. She began her career with the Majestics, which were a traveling choir that sang gospel music over the south. She would sign a contract early on with Artista Records an would go on to release her first album shortly after signing her first contract. She has achieved much acclaim in the R&B industry.
First Album
Her first album would not be received well by music critics although it would gain positions in the charts as well as hold many hit singles. The album called Miss Thang would gain enough ground to make it to number thirty six on the Billboard 200 as well as go on to number seven on the Top R&B Albums charts. The album would start off slow but would go on to sell over three million copies within the United States. Some of singles that were released off of the album would include Don’t Take It Personal and Like This and Like That. The album would further Monica’s music career by later winning her a Billboard Music Award as well as an American Music Award nomination.
Further Albums
Monica would go to record the song called The Boy Is Mine with another recording artist under the name of Brandy. Because of a fight between the two, the single garnered much public attention and would go on to win a Grammy Award under the category of Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group and the single would go multiple times platinum. She would go on to release the album under the same name as the single, which would go on to become her best selling album with the copies selling over three million in just the United States.
It would also contain two other number one singles and was critically claimed as a success by Rolling Stone Magazine as well as Allmusic. After she would go on a tour for support of the album, she would head back to the studio to begin work on her next recording. She would release the album called All Eyez On Me in 2001 on her new record label called J Records. The album did not receive near as much success as her previous albums and got a luke warm reception from critics as well.
Present
Monica would gather steam and go back to work. She would release her next studio recording in 2003 called After the Storm. The album would go to the number one spot immediately on the Billboard 200, which would be the singer’s only number one to the present. Many critics have said that the album has many aspect to it that will keep her audiences, both young and old, enthralled with her style. The album would also hold her first top ten single in a number of years by the name of So Gone.
From this hit, the artist would go on to release three other singles from the album some of which were called U Should’ve Known Better, which would also reach the number nineteen position on the Billboard Hot 100. Monica would go on to release other albums that have continued to be successful and has sustained a large following of fans.
