From the Big Apple

The American rock group Mindless Self Indulgence came from the big city of New York and was formed in 1997. With a cross categorical style of new age punk rock, alternative, and a splash of hip hop, the band has entertained audiences across the United States with their exaggerated style and crazy stage antics. The band was formed by members Johnny Urine, Steve Righ?, Vanessa Y.T. and Kitty and would go on to be one of the more risqué acts of the twenty first century.

First Albums

The band was created by vocalist and song writer Jimmy Urine who was born on September 7 1969 in New York. Urine would release his first solo album titled Mindless Self Indulgence, which ironically would become the band’s actual name in later years. Later he would be joined by Steve Righ?, who would co write the song Bed of Roses.

The two would duo on album called The Left Rights although none of their solo and duo albums would gain much attention from the rock n’ roll or punk rock media. The two would continue to play in and around the New York area for a while trying to get their name out and about. Steve Righ?, who has a birth name of Steven Montano, would begin using the last name with a question mark when someone approached him at a show and asked the questions: You’re Steve, righ?

The guitarist found this rather amusing and began using this as his stage name. Another member to join the band and pose as a fill in was Rob Kleiner, who was also a member for the band Tub Ring. Steve Righ? was hospitalized for a hip injury with led to Kleiner filling in for his position. Jokingly, Steve would go on to say that every time he goes through an airport, the group must spend a lot of time at the metal detectors because of his hip.

The Many Singles

Mindless Self Indulgence, like many other new age groups, has written many singles without full albums, however, the group would churn out a few full length studio sets in the future. Steve and Urine have released such singles as Dicks Are for My Friends and Twenty Four Seven. On the album Mindless Self Indulgence, he would write the songs Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy.

This song, among others appears on the album called Tight, where Steve Righ? performs both vocals as well as plays the guitar. Another member to join the group at a later date was the bassist Lyn-Z. He was born in Scotland but would move to Connecticut early in life and eventually meet up with the band. Interestingly, the bassist Lyn-Z would be married to Gerard Way of the band My Chemical Romance. The ceremony was held back stage at a Linkin Park concert.

Independent Record Label

Jimmy Urine would later help the band get a record label by forming his own company with James Galus. The record label would be called Uppity Cracker. This would help the group distribute their demos such as The Left Rights and Alienating Our Audience. The record label would go on to facilitate the rapper pop group called The O.
