Meat Loaf

Rock n’ roll came for slaves singing gospel in the fields. Their lives were hell and they used music to lift out of it. That’s what rock n’ roll should do – take you to a better place.

Lone Star State

Meat Loaf, born Michael Lee Aday in the big city of Dallas, Texas on September of 1947, was little known for many years of his life. However, history would not allow this to be the case and Michael, better now known as Meat Loaf, would go on to have one of the most successful trilogy albums in rock n’ roll history.

Not only would he be a musical star, but he would also go on to perform in over fifty different movies and television series over this artistic career. He would eventually receive numerous awards of the highest of honors for his vocal career still being one of the best selling talents of the present.

Early Life

Marvin began his musical career early on in his local high school of Thomas Jefferson. He then went on to Lubbock Christian College but would later transfer to the University of North Texas. During this time, Marvin was called up by the U.S. Army to prepare to fight in Vietnam.

Despite Marvin’s best efforts to be considered not an option for battle, he still passed all of the physical assessments and was given a draft notice in 1967, of which he would pretend to ignore. Marvin’s mother was in bad health and would eventually die, leaving him enough money to buy a car and move to California after repeated episodes with his alcoholic father turned violent.

Into The Music

Meat Loaf Soul was the first band that was started by Marvin. There was little doubt of his talent when it was claimed that in the studio he hit a note high enough to blow a fuse in the recording equipment. While playing clubs around the Los Angeles area, Meat Loaf began to get the attention of many rising musicians such as Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, and Janice Joplin just to name a few.

During this same time, he had joined the production of Hair in which he performed a duet with the singer Stoney Murphey. This would eventually get them both a record deal and they would go on to release an album together called Stoney and Meat Loaf. One of the singles off the album would reach seventy one on the Billboard Hot 100. The two would go on to support this album by touring with groups such as The Who and Bob Segar.

Back To the Stage

After touring to support the album release, Meat Loaf headed back to the stage of acting where he rejoined the Hair ensemble on the Broadway Production schedule. After this tour on Broadway, he was called up in 1973 to play a role in the rock opera The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The show proved a dramatic success and afforded Marvin the chance to meet his future collaborator Jim Steinman, both of which who would immediately begin work on their first album Bat Out Of Hell. Although the work on the album was started in 1972, it would not be finished until two years later in 1974.

After finishing the album, the duo would shop the record around to the different record labels for many years until Cleveland International Records would take it on in 1977. Finally, the first album was released.

Success and Sorrow

Like many in the rock n’ roll industry, when the Bat Out of Hell release gained fame and momentum, the career of Meat Loaf began to spike upward at an alarming rate. Along with his spike in career came his spike in cocaine use as well. The growing fame of the album Bat Out Of Hell would go on to break numerous musical records and gain many counts of acclaim. The album sold over forty million copies and has never been taken off of the UK Top 100 Album charts.

His life would never be the same. Meat Loaf would go on to release two other albums that would make up the Bat Out of Hell trilogy that would each have varying degrees of success. He has also appeared in many movies and television shows as well, rounding out his success as an overall performer.
