The Biography
Marvin Sapp was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He began singing a church as early as age 4 and spent a majority of his teenagers years in several Gospel groups. He was also pursuing his life ling dream of becoming a pastor at the same time. Marvin Sapp was invited to join the legendary Gospel group Commissioned in 1991.
Gospel Commissioned
He joined Commissioned and worked on several albums with the gospel group. His vocals are much remembered fin the album “Number 7” in 1991. The album is considered among some of their best work to date. In 1994 the Commissioned and Marvin Sapp recorded the groups new album titled “Matters of the Heart”. The album is released on Benson Records which cater to contemporary Gospel music. The album was a commercial success as it reached No. 7 on the US Gospel charts. There was an element of mainstream success as the album even charted on the US mainstream RnB charts, peaking at No. 65.
Sapp, recorded his third album with the group, releasing it in 1996 – “Irreplaceable Love” It was an even bigger commercial success as it reached No. 9 on the Gospel charts. After the release of the alum, Marvin Sapp decided to leave the Commissioned on personal grounds.
The Solo Singer
As a solo artist he received phenomenal response and is often considered among the most successful contemporary Gospel singers of all times. His raw vocals and eclectic music makes it perfect for Gospel to cross over into the mainstream. Sapp released his first self-titled album in 1996. But it would be his next album which would bring him recognition and attention. The album “Brace and Mercy” released in 1997, was critically hailed and Marvin Sapp’s solo career was firmly getting established.
In 1999, he returned with “Nothing Else Matters” which was an average album but still brought in enough mainstream recognition. “I Believe” in 2002 was another album which helped to create the recognition in the contemporary gospel world.
Commercial Acclaim
It was in 2007 that Sapp would achieve personal acclaim as a gospel singer with the release of the album “Thirsty” and the lead single “Never Would Have Made It”. The single made t to the US Hot 100 Singles and peaked at No. 82. A rare achievement of a Gospel singer. The album itself would go on to sell over 500,000 copies making it Marvin Sapp’s biggest selling album, it debut at No.28 on the mainstream US album charts.
Marvin Sapp’s follow-up to the resounding success to “Thirsty” would be “Here I Am” in 2010. The album is highest charting gospel album of all times, it debut at No.2 on the US charts.
