Capital City
Born in the city of Washington D.C. in 1939, Marvin Gaye would become one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. He was raised in what was called the Simple City Projects and before he started his music career, he was a caddie at the Norbeck Country Club in Maryland. He was the son of a minister and would begin his first moments in music within his father’s church as a member of the choir.
He would join many bands while in high school as he was multi talented and would eventually leave his high school while in the eleventh grade to pursue his music career. He would go on to join the military where he had hopes of becoming an aviator of some sort although he would later be discharged as he would fake a mental illness to get out of the service.
Career Start
Being multi talented in many different instruments, Marvin Gaye was looking for any type of role he could find within the music industry. He would join his childhood friend Reese Palmer and they would go on to form a band and would be later signed by Bo Diddley to Okeh Records and would record the songs Wyatt Earp and Hey Little School Girl. The singles would become moderate successes but would be enough to get them into the band The Moonglows, who would after a break up of original members become The New Moonglows.
Gaye would spend a few years of his time with the group but would eventually leave to pursue his own solo career. His first solo album was released in 1961 and was called The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye. This album would prove to be completely unsuccessful and would be a disappointment to both Gaye and Motown; however, he would not be deterred. Gaye would find his first hit single called Stubborn Kind of Fellow in September of 1962, which would propel his career into the spotlight.
He would go on to release a number of other singles that would chart in the top forties and would go on to collaborate with industry legend Smokey Robinson and other musical artists of the time. He would go on to team up with other artists and would release his next album called You’re All I Need in 1968.
