In the beginning
Mario Dewar Barret was born on August, 27, 1986 in Maryland, Baltimore. Originally from Nevis, a small island in the Caribbean, he was raised by his grandmother due to his mother suffering from drug addiction. Mario knew from a young age that he wanted to be a singer. When he was four his mother brought him a karaoke machine and started singing and performing for his grandmother.
At the age of eleven, Mario performed “I’ll Make Love to You,” at a talent show at Coppin State University; he was discovered by a producer by the name of Troy Patterson. While in high school, he continued to hone his skills and was signed to J Records when he was only 14 years old. In 2002, Mario recorded his own rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “You and I,” which was featured on the Dr. Doolittle 2 soundtrack.
Not just a game
Later that year, Mario began recording his first album and released his first single, “Just a Friend 2002.” This single reached #4 on the R&B charts. He released his debut, self titled album and two more singles, “C’Mon” and “Braid My Hair.” Following the success of his debut album selling more than 700,000 records, Mario performed on the Scream Tour 3, as the opening act. After being on tour for almost 2 years, he released his second album, Turning Point (2004). The first single, “Let Me Love You,” reached #1on the Billboard 100 for more than eight weeks. Mario’s sophomore album went platinum and the leading single went double-platinum within a year.
In 2007, Mario released his third album, Go!, that only sold 331,000 copies. This album was not as popular as the previous albums and the single, “Crying Out for Me,” only went gold. In an order to promote the album, Mario allowed fans to listen to the entire album on his Myspace page. After waiting two years, he released his fourth album, D.N.A., in 2009. His first single of his latest album, “Break Up,” featured Gucci Mane, an Atlanta rapper, and Sean Garret. This in one of Mario’s most successful singles to this day, reaching #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, #2 on the Hot R&B/hip-hop charts, and selling more than 500,000 ringtones. Despite the success of the single, this album is one of his lowest selling records of his career.
