Manchester Orchestra

. . . It's exciting because we see people reacting to it and it breathes a new life into it, where we've beaten it like a dead horse. Now though we want to play it more because more people want to hear it.

The Beginning

In 2005, Andy Hull initiated the forming of Manchester Orchestra, named after the city of Manchester in England, which is a capital for music and arts.  They released the extended play recording, 5 Stories, in 2004.  Their second EP, You Brainstorm, I Brainstorm, but Brilliance Needs a  Good Editor, was released in 2005.  Singles were, and still are, available for download on a number of music sites that offer mp3 downloads.

The EP's werefollowed by their debut album, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child in 2007.  The album did not do well commercially, but it did attract the attention of critics and music industry professionals, and they ultimately signed a contract with Canvasback Records.  They toured later that year with The Annuals.

Picking up Momentum

In 2008, the Manchester Orchestra released the extend play recording, Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind.  The singles from the EP were available for download at their website and at other music sites.  They announced on their MySpace page that they were working on their next album, to be released in 2009.  On February 4, 2009, they posted the link to the single, I've Got Friends, where it could be  downloaded for free.

Their album, Mean Everything to Nothing, was released in April of 2009.  This album peaked on the Billboard Top 200 at #37.  They launched a world tour to span the rest of 2009, and much of 2010, to promote the album.  In 2009, they also released three additional extended play recordings, including MySpace Transmissions: Manchester Orchestra, catering to the internet music download crowd.

Looking to the Future

Hull has announced that the next album, which will be entitled Let Go of Your Sorrowful Groaning is due to be released in late 2010 or early 2011.  Tour dates are already scheduled, promoting Mean Everything to Nothing throughout much of 2010.  Already this year, they have released an additional EP, entitled I Could Be the Only One.

Manchester Orchestra have appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  Additionally, I Can Feel a Hot One, was featured on an episode of Gossip Girl.  Other television appearances include One Tree Hill and 90210. These appearances, in addition to positive reviews and aggressive touring, have helped create a fan base for the band.

Did you know . . .

  1. Their first album was actually Nobody Sings Anymore, but it was never released because the band believed it a poor representation of who they were.

  2. Founder and lead singer, Andy Hull, opted to be home schooled his senior year in high school to free up his time to focus on Manchester Orchestra.

  3. Their single, Wolves at Night, was featured on the video game, NHL 8.
