Unemployment is high right now. Everybody can’t be rappers like me, or editors like you, or magazine owners or store owners. There’s people who wake up everyday ready to shoot themselves. I connect with them, because I know struggle.
The Beginning of a Career
Born Aaron Tyler in Los Angeles, MC Eiht started his career when he was still a teenager as an MC with the Compton's Most Wanted. Although very young, he played a strong role in their debut album, It's a Compton Thang. The band was modeling themselves after NWA, but they were less controversial, which cost them some notoriety. The album was closely followed by Straight Checkn 'Em and Music to Driveby.
While these recordings were successful, they did not attract the following that had come with MC Eiht's first solo single, Striht Up Menace. A year later, his debut album, We Come Strapped, went straight to the top of the R&B charts. Unfortunately, this marked the pique of his sales, although he managed to retain a cult following. What was lacking in record sales was being made up in online mp3 downloads and video streaming.
Competing with his own Success
Eiht's 1996 album, Death Threatz and 1997 album, Last Man Standing were not nearly as successful as his first effort, although critics reported that musically they were better albums. Due to the lackluster performance of these two albums, Epic dropped him from their label. He signed with Hoo Bangin' and recorded Section 8 in 1999, critically acclaimed to be his best and most diverse album.
MC Eiht continued to record an album each year, and while none of them appeared on the Billboard charts, his fan base has been strong and loyal, as is apparent by the internet attention he attracts. Much of his music is available for download on his website and other music sites. Sales in digital music have supplemented his record sales substantially over the years.
Still Kicking
The disappointing record sales of some of his latest albums have not stopped MC Eiht from moving forward with his career. In addition to solo recordings, he has worked C on multiple collaborations with Spice 1, Brotha Lynch Hung, and associates from Compton's Most Wanted. There are rumors now of his returning to CMW later this year.
In addition to his music projects, MC Eiht appeared with Ice T and Mack 10 in the movie, Thicker than Water, as well as taking roles in the films, Who Made the Potatoe Salad? and Reasons. MC Eiht has contributed singles to four movie soundtracks, most recently for the 2003 film, Intoxicating.
