Disturbing the Peace!
The multi-talented rap and hip-hop superstar has created a classy image of himself. Yet he can be the baggy denim wearing street smart rapper and also create French cognacs including designing the raunchy bottle. He is an actor, songwriter, record label entrepreneur and of course multi platinum selling solo artist. He has sold nearly 40 million albums worldwide. Ludacris has come a long way from his humble beginnings in Illinois to become the Grammy award winning artist. He scored 7 No.1 singles which makes him tie with Puff Daddy as a rap artist with most No.1 singles in the US. Ludacris has a budding acting career appearing in more than 13 feature films
The Early Years
Ludacris was born in Illinois as Christopher Brian Bridges; he was nine years old when he started writing his own rhymes. His family moved to Atlanta, Georgia and he went to study music management at Georgia State University. While studying Ludacris continued to pursue his rap music career by starting out as a DJ and mixer for local talents.
One of his first jobs was being a radio editor as “DJ Chris Lova Lova”. He came under the notice of rapper and producer Timbaland in 1998. Ludacris recorded a single for
Timbaland’s rap album the same year. Ludacris signed with Def Jam records and released his first album “Back for the Fist Time” in 2000. The album was produced by his friend Timbaland along with several other renowned producers like the Neptunes and Jermaine Dupree. The album made an immediate impact and peaked at No.3 largely due to the success of the single “Southern Hospitality” and “What’s Your Fantasy”; both the singles peaked at No.5 on the US Rap charts. Def jam heavily promoted the album and it has sold 3 million copies in the US.
Mainstream Success
Def Jam Records wanted a quick follow up to the initial success and Ludacris went back into the studio record his second album. The album “Word of Mouf” was released in Nov 2001 peaking at No.1 on the US R&B charts and going one better to No.3 as compared to his first album. The album spawned one of his signature tunes “Area Codes” which was featured on the Rush Hour 2 soundtrack. The rap was a real tongue twister and showed the lighter side of Ludacris. The album has sold 3 million copies in the US
His next album would be hailed as his finest. Released in 2003, “Chicken n’ Beer” debut straight into No.1 on the US Album charts. The somewhat silly album cover shows the artist enjoying his favorite things – women, beer and chicken. The lyrical theme of the album talks about drugs, sex and having fun albeit with a lot of wit.
The sexual overtones on “Stand Up” was hi first No.1 US single. The album would go on to sell 2 million copies in the US and his second million seller in Canada.
The Success Continues
In 2004, he released “The Red Light District” his second album to debut No.1 on the US charts. The album would spawn hit single “Pimpin All over the World”. The album has sold another 2 million copies world wide and would be his last multi platinum effort.
In 2004 he received widespread critical praise for his performance in the movie Crash. “Release Therapy” in 2006 made a trilogy albums debut at No.1 on the Billboard charts. The music was more robust and personal. The song “Runaway Love” with Mary J Blige deals with the very sensitive issue of violence against women which made it to No.2 on the singles chart. His fun and catchy “Money Maker” was his second No. 1 single.
His next album “Theater of the Mind” in 2008 was well received; it contained the song “Gansta Grillz” which took digs at John McCain and Hillary Clinton. A host of guest artists like Jay Z, Chris Brown and even Jamie Foxx makes an appearance.
In 2010, he has released his fourth US No.1 album titled “Battle of the Sexes” featuring hit single “My Chick Bad”. The album has received mostly positive reviews for its party styled music
