The Beginning
Patrick Lanshaw was born in 1982 in Memphis Tennessee, Better known by his stage name, Lil Wyte, his early claim to fame was being able to rap all of Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back without missing a word at the age of eight. He started participating in freestyle battles when he was in the ninth grade, and started writing before he graduated from high school. Discovered by Grammy-Award winning rap group, Three 6 Mafia, he set out to begin his solo career in the rap and hip hop world.
Lil Wyte's debut album, Doubt Me Now, was released in 2003. It sold over 135,000 copies and became an instant underground hit with no promotion. According to Lil Wyte, 20,000 mp3 downloads of his music were purchased in the first week of release. His 2004 release, Phinally Phamous, sold 230,000 copies and peaked at #6 on the R&B chart. The album came with a bonus DVD, which included the video for the single, I Sho Will, and an interview.
Building a Niche
Lil Wyte spent three years touring and promoting his first two albums. In 2007, he released The One and Only, which peaked at #3 on the rap chart. The influence of Three 6 Mafia remained evident in this recordings, which, in addition to his “machine-gun like delivery” of articulate and meaningful lyrics, kept his fans rapt and boosted his record sales.
The Bad Influence, released in 2007, featured production activities from rappers DJ Paul and Juicy J. The album received mixed review, but it was commercially strong. It peaked at #5 on the Billboard rap charts. During 2009 and 2010, Lil Wyte released four mixtapes, including a Christmas recording called Wyte Christmas. The recording is really only marginally Christmas-based.
Here and Now
Lil Wyte's newest album, The Underboss, is due to be released some time in 2010. He is slated to perform at Dubbfest 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana, alongside fellow artists, Haystak, Munki Boy, Brabo Gator, Jelly Roll, and Whiteboy. He is scheduled for a concert date at Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio in May.
Between his solo recordings, Lil Wyte has worked on collaborations with a number of other artists, including Juicy J, Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat, and Frayser Boy. He appears on their albums, and occasionally, in performances. He has credited his relationship with these artists, especially Three 6 Mafia, for his success thus far.
