Across the Pond 

Leona Lewis was born in England in the year of 1985 in the small borough of Islington. She grew up in an average household but was enrolled at the Sylvia Young Theatre School where she would learn the ins and outs of song and dance. She would go on to learn to play instruments such as the piano and also learn the guitar, which would afford her to write her first song at the age of twelve years old. She would be influenced by industry greats such as Stevie Wonder and Eva Cassidy.

Career Start

Lewis got her first break when she auditioned for the television show called The X Factor where she sang the famous Judy Garland song Over the Rainbow. She would go on to win the show and be awarded a one million pound recording contract. She would release her first single, which was a cover of Kelley Clarkson’s A Moment Like This and was released not as a free music downloaded although it would set a world record and be downloaded over fifty thousand times in the first thirty minutes.

From this success Leona Lewis would ink a deal with Clive Davis under the J Records company that would pay for five albums from Lewis. Her debut album would be called Spirit and she would end up recording songs for the album in many different cities. In November of 2007 the album would be released and be listed at number one in the UK as well as Ireland. The second single off of the album would be called Bleeding Love and would go on to sale over two hundred thousand copies in the first week and would stay on the UK Singles Charts for seven weeks at number one.

The third single would contain the songs Better in Time and Footprints in the Sand. The songs would make it to number two in the UK and number eleven in the United States. The song Forgive Me would be the fifth single released off of the album and would go to number five in the UK. The last single off of the album Spirit would go on to be released in January of 2009 and did not do quite as well as the others as it would reach sixty six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number thirty three on the Pop 100.

Cruising

Leona Lewis has gained a solid following in the United States as well as across Europe. She was afforded the chance to perform with the legendary Jimmy Page at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. She would receive three nominations for a Grammy Award in 2008 as Bleeding Love was under the category of Record of the Year as well as Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album although she would not win any of the listed categories.

Her second album would be called Echo that was released in November of 2009. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California and was said to have taken almost nine months to produce. After the release of the album, she would embark on a world tour that would take her back to the UK, Austria, and Ireland. She was performing songs off of both of the albums Spirit and Echoes.
