Lauryn Hill is considered one of the most influential hip hop artists of all times. She is a creative powerhouse; first as a member of the group Fugees where she integrated various genres of music creating America's most acclaimed hip-hop group. But it was her debut solo album which is considered a genre defining album. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" has been praised by artists and record buyers alike being one of hip-hop music's greatest records.


Her spiritual awareness combining with the soulful music has gave the album an astonishing and record breaking 10 Grammy nominations (the most ever for an artist in one night) and nearly 18 million in albums sales. Her long self-imposed exile has been harshly criticized as the fans have waited for a new album which both the artist and record label claim has been recorded but on hold since 2000. Her infrequent appearances and strange live performances have puzzled everyone.


In the beginning


Born in South Orange New Jersey. Lauryn Hill was exposed to 60s Motown music and soul music. Music was always an important aspect of her growing up and her elder brother even played several instruments. Hill did not continue her college and dropped to pursue a career in singing.


It was a meeting with Prakazrel "Pras" Michael where he asked her to join the music group he was starting. Along with another Haitian musician Wycleaf Jean who happened to be Pras's cousin, they started the band the Fugees. The ban's artistic quality and innovative production proved to be a signature sound which would see them be voted as the 9th most important Hip Hop artist by VH1.


The band recorded two albums, "Blunted on Reality" in 1994 and the multi-platinum effort "The Score" in 1996. It was the second album which was not only a commercial breakthrough but one of most critically acclaimed album of the 90s. The distinctive blend of hip-hop, jazz, RnB and pop made the group and its sexy singer Lauryn Hill - superstars.


The Miseducation Begins


After the global accolades for the Fugees album which went on to win two Grammies. Lauryn Hill started working on her solo effort. So did the others and Fugees stopped working as a group.


Continuing with Columbia Records label after the Fugees, Lauryn Hill set about recording her first solo album. The album featured many guest artists such as legendary guitar player Carlos Santana and pop star Mary J. Blige. The album was predominantly written in her home town at South Orange , New Jersey and recorded in Jamaica. The song writing explores relationships between Hill and Wycleaf Jean, who were dating during the Fugees era.


The album was released in 1998 and sold nearly 500,000 copies during the first week itself. It debut at No.1 on the charts and stayed on top for 4 weeks. The phenomenally successful single "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
