"I do dance music, and I can be pretty camp myself from time to time."
Kylie Minogue is an Australian performer that has been around since the 1980s. In addition to being an established singer and songwriter she is also a well known actress in her home country.
Acting
In Melbourne, Australia, May of 1968, Kylie Minogue was born. She has a younger brother and sister. Her and her siblings were raised in Surrey Hills in Melbourne. Kylie and her sister started out early as actresses. When she was just eleven years old Kylie found herself on soap operas called Skyways and The Sullivan's. She was given the lead role in The Henderson Kids as well.
While acting definitely intrigued Kylie, music was her true passion. A weekly music show titled Young Talent Time received a demo tape from a young Kyle. In 1985, she made her singing debut on television. Kylie was turned down by the show while her sister was on regularly. Kylie was outshone by her sister until she got on the show Neighbours. It was this show that helped her to make a name for herself and win several Logie Awards.
Singer
While at a benefit concert Kylie Minogue went up on stage and began to sing. It was there that she got noticed by Mushroom Records execs and became signed shortly after. Her first single was her cover of Loco-Motion. This single went straight to #1 and stayed there for nearly two months on the Australian charts. She had the highest selling single of the year.
Her second single I Should Be So Lucky brought her continued success. She released her debut self titled album. While she continued to gain popularity on the British charts she did not do well in Canada and the US. In 1988, Kylie got her third #1 hit with Got to be Certain. It was then that she decided to leave Neighbours to be a full time singer.
Continued Success
Enjoy Yourself was Kylie's second album. While she saw plenty of success in Europe and Asia she still was unable to break through in the US. Kylie shook her girl next door look with her third album Rhythm of Love. She began to take over her videos and show herself as a mature woman. Better the Devil You Know was the song that changed her from teen pop princess to mature adult woman.
Throughout the 1990s Kylie continued to release albums and make sexy and provocative videos. Still though, she could not break through in the US.
Then, in 2001, Kylie released Fever. This album tore through the UK and Australian charts. From that album Can't Get You out of My Head became her biggest and most successful single to date. It was with this single that Kylie was finally able to get the attention of the US.
While she had finally got the attention of the US it did not last long. Her following albums went back to being ignored. Kylie told her record label in America that she did not want to spend extra time or effort winning them over. She had plenty of success in other parts of the country that she wanted to focus on.
Illness
In 2005, Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was in the middle of her Showgirl - The Greatest Hits Tour. It was cancelled as she underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Kylie was open about her struggles with cancer. This has helped young girls to understand the importance of getting checked regularly.
Back
In the fall of 2006, Kylie came back to finish her tour. While she was back she had to take it easy. Her dance numbers were changed and she had to cancel certain shows due to exhaustion. The following year Kylie released her tenth album, X. In the fall of 2009, Kylie had her very first United States tour.
Kylie is currently working on her eleventh studio album.
