The last album not only won the Record of the Year at the 2010 Grammy, but is currently the biggest selling digital album of all-times. The album has sold nearly 7 million copies world wide. In an era of dying sales, plastic music and lack of creativity, the bands music has shown incredible staying power and lyrical consistency. The band has always received mixed reviews for their celebrity status betraying the true nature of rebellious or honest in their music, but after the Only By Night, even the most critical voices have been silenced.

Band of Brothers

The band Kings of Leon are actually three brothers and their cousin. The band - Jarred Followill (bassist), Caleb Followill (lead vocal and guitar), Nathan Followill (drums) and their cousin Matthew Followill (lead guitar). Their upbringing was quite sheltered and religious. Their father was an evangelical priest and along with their father they would travel the southern states as their father would preach. Their father's middle name was "Leon".

The brothers have mostly been home-schooled or were in parochial schools. Till 1997 they lived a conservative and religious life following their father. It was only when their parents divorced and their father left the church did the brothers started getting involved with music. Their music was influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers band and even U2.

The boys were determined to change their life and embrace the rock music which inspired them. They recorded demos and played at small clubs in Tennessee, the sound was an up tempo boogie of southern rock with hard blues riffs. RCA took immediate notice of this band of talented musicians with good looks and signed them on. The band released their debut record, an EP titled "Holly Rover Novocaine" and quickly followed by "What I Saw" in 2003.

The song "Molly's Chamber" a Southern blues influenced rock and the critics were taking note of teenagers playing 60's style classic rock with such confidence. Their first album "Youth and Young Manhood" was released in the UK and US by the fall of 2003. The response in UK was phenomenal. The band was being hailed as the Saviors of Rock. It reached No.3 on the album charts and the UK tour was a hit. Back in the US the album was not able to break the top 100.

The Sophomore and the Tours!

The band got a real boost as they were selected by U2 as the opening act during the Vertigo World Tour. In fact Larry Mullen Jr. the legendary drummer for U2 is a big fan of the band. The sophomore effort "Aha Shake Heartbreak" debut at No.3 in the UK charts where they were already bona-fide stars. In the US however the album reached as high as No.55. The album sounds Credence Clearwater Revival in the internet era. The album is a critical success and band are selected to open for Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan.

The bands third album is released "Because of the Times" in 2007. The album is a genuine progression from the Southern Rock sounds of the first two albums. The music is more progressive rock with a punk attitude. It debuts No.1 in the UK and Ireland.

This is an album where the boys want to be taken seriously as the new American band about to capture the world. The singles "Knocked Up" is a crowd favorite at their live shows. The album peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard charts. The band is already playing arenas in the UK and touring Europe as headliners.

Only By Night

After relentless touring they realized the importance breaking it big in the US is a priority. After spending the entire 2008 for recording they release their fourth album "Only By Night" in Sept '08; it debuts at No.1 in the UK and also has two of its singles at No.1 in the UK.

The album has sold 5 million copies in the UK making it the biggest seller of 08. the songs "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" are the bends best! The latter wins the coveted Record of the Year and two other Grammies in 2010. The album is pure adrenalin rock and complete change from their southern bluesy rock sound. This is lead guitar driven and yet melodic. They draw heavily from U2 and experiment with various guitar textures.

Only By Night has thus far sold nearly 8 million albums worldwide and it also became their first platinum selling US album. The bands videos were in huge demand on MTV and VH1.

Kings of Leon went on a headlining world tour which culminates into sold out show at London's O2 arena which is recorded for a live DVD called "Live at The O2 London"

The band has confirmed the release of a new album in 2010. Kings of Leon are they new rock
