The story is always the same: an artist or a group stumbles on a phenomenally successful refrain but fails to back it up with a follow-up. One-hit wonders are a common occurrence in the music industry. The story is always the same: an artist or a group stumbles on a phenomenally successful refrain but fails to back it up with a follow-up. Hip-hop lady Khia has long been pushed in that direction, but she has so far kept herself out of the corner. Critics say that, when real talent is involved, there's no such thing as a one-hit wonder. It may just hold true for her.
Khia's Many Talents
Her childhood in Philadelphia and Florida already indicates the makings of an artist. She got into a number of things, including cheerleading, tap dancing and even gospel music for a time. Throughout her area, she was a common feature at talent shows and parades.
It was hardly surprising that she would eventually start a career making club-friendly music, as she was very familiar with that kind of environment and market. She, after all, held a job as a bartender at the Tampa, Florida spot Club XS. That, plus her numerous DJ friends across the scene, explains her music's heavy club influences.
A big break came in 2002 with the independent release of her debut album Thug Misses. Most notable in the playlist was the eventual single My Neck, My Back (Lick It), which had considerable play time on the radio and the club scene. Despite the heavy editing on the sexually explicit content, the single helped push the album to gold certification sales. It was, however, the only single from the album to make it to the charts.
Khia the Capable
Numerous performances and an extensive tour followed the release of Thug Misses, and there would be no Khia release until 2006. Gangstress was released under her own indie label, Thug Misses Entertainment and debuted to a #67 spot on the hip-hop charts. A mix tape, All Hail the Queen: Hit 'Em Up Mixtape was released as a follow-up that year.
She maintained her own label but signed on with Big Cat Records for her 2008 release, Nasti Muzik. Despite leaving Big Cat just weeks before the scheduled release, the album was released as planned, thanks in part to a promotional mix tape, The Boss Lady. Gucci Mane and DJ Craze contributed to the album, but it failed to chart.
As of 2009, Khia is reported to be working on a new album titled Motor Mouf. The double disc album is slated for a 2010 release, and one single Been A Bad Girl has already been pressed for it.
