For much of her career she has written songs for the likes Britney Spears, Ludacris.and Usher. She has managed. Her beautiful and classy looks also gave her a start as a lead in a music video with Usher. Signing with Interscope records she released her first album to massive commercial and critical acclaim. Showcasing her singing talent and her sexy image, her album has sold over 500,000 copies. But at her core is her songwriting skill which is acknowledged and recognized in the pop fraternity.
Early Life
Keri Hilson was born in the small city of Decatur in Georgia, while in school she took piano and singing lessons. Her passion for singing was quite obvious and she joined an all-girl group at the age of 14 called By D’Sign. After graduating from Emory University she started writing professionally and also did backing vocals as a session artist
A Star is Rising
In 2001, she began songwriting and would gain a lot of recognition and success for writing songs. She wrote for the likes of Britney Spears, Ciara, Usher and rapper Ludacris. After working as a songwriter for nearly 5 years she signed to Timbaland’s record label “Mosley Music Group”. She appeared on several videos and collaboration including P. Diddy’s album “Press Play”. Hilson appeared for several tracks on Timbaland’s solo album “Shock Value”. The partnership lead to number three single on the US Top 100 Charts called “The Way I Are”. She continued to collaborate with other artists most notably with Usher; she appeared in his video “Love in this Club”. She also was on the Ne-Yo video “Miss Independent”
Going Solo
While she was collaborating with other artist, Keri Hilson continued to write and record demos for her first. As a songwriter for so many other artists she wanted her own album to be perfect.
Production duties were handled primarily by Timbaland who convinced her to continue her collaborations with other artists even for her solo effort. She also wanted to have the opportunity to work with the likes of Kanye West and Ne-Yo. The album was released in Mar 2008. She collaborated with the top names in hip-hop, RnB music such as Justin Timberlake who co wrote the song “Slow Dance”. Other notable guest appearance included Keyshia Cole, Lil’ Wayne and of course her favorite Ne-Yo and Kanye West
The album peaked at No.4 on the US album charts and at No.1 on the RnB charts. The song “Knock You Down” which featured both Kanye West and Ne-Yo was her best solo release reaching No.3 on the Hot 100 charts and No.1 on the Hip/Hop charts. It also achieved a Grammy nomination and was an international success reaching No.1 in the charts in New Zealand.
She appeared on the rapper Asher North’s first album. Keri Hilson went to win several awards for he first album including Best New Artist which she won at the Soul Train Awards and the BET awards. Hilson was also nominated in the Best New Artist category at the Grammy Awards which was won by Zac Brown Band
