Getting Started
Kelly Price was singing at seven years old in her father's church. She was discovered by Mariah Carey, who introduced her to Tommy Mottola, CEO of Sony Columbia Records. She started her career singing back-up for various recording artists, including SWV, Aretha Franklin, Faith Evans, and R. Kelly. She has appeared on tracks with Mariah Carey, The Notorious B.I.G., and Whitney Houston.
Her debut album, Soul Woman, was released in 1998, and included her hit Friend of Mine. The single appeared twice on the album, once as a remix with R. Kelly and Ronald Isley. The remix went to #1 on the R&B Charts, and helped push the album to double platinum status.
Enjoying Success
Mirror Mirror was Kelly's second album. Released in 2000, the album featured a cover of Shirley Murdock's 1986 hit, As We Lay, which won her a Grammy nomination. Her single, Love Sets Your Free, featured Baby Face, Tamar Braxton, Dru Hill, Case, LovHer, and more. The single hit #14 on the R&B chart. Mirror Mirror was followed by her Christmas album, One Family.
Her third regular studio album, Priceless, was released in 2003. The album went to #2 on the R&B charts, demonstrating the steady growth in her fan base. The album certified gold; however, the singles were and are also available for download at iTunes. Singles included Take it to the Head, Someday, and He Proposed. Take It to the Head featured rapper Keith Murray.
A Change in Genre
In 2006, Kelly Price changed things up a bit by releasing a gospel album, This is Who I am. The album was well received, and peaked at #1 on the Billborad Gospel Chart and at #9 on the R&B Chart. She followed up the album with her Sisters in the Spirit 2007 tour. Her transition to gospel only served attract more loyal fans. In 2009, Kelly appeared on Coco's gospel album, The Winner In Me, on the track, Oh Mary.
In September of 2009, Kelly Price teamed up with Deborah Cox and Tamia for The Queen Project. This supergroup was formed specifically to bring about change and to exact empowerment for women and the families who depend on them. Their first single, Queen, is due out later this year, to be followed by the album, The Queen Project. The three artists appeared in two concerts at the end of 2009, and they are planning the tour to follow.
