Growing up in the city of Fort Worth, Texas, Kelly Clarkson would begin her music career getting her big break with the hit television show called American Idol and would go on to solidify a fan base in both pop culture as well as country music. She would be afforded many years of success from this start and create a fan base that others would only dream of having. Clarkson was discovered singing in the hallway at her high school and was prompted to join the school choir, where she would get her first beginnings in music.
Beginning
Clarkson would get a chance to show the world her musical talents when she was featured on the first season of the television show American Idol. She would go on to win the contest in the fall of 2002. She would go on to sing the song A Moment Like This, which would also be featured on her first album called Thankful. The single A Moment Like This would go on to burn up the music charts where it would climb from number fifty two all the way to number one. The first week of the album release would see sales of over two hundred thousand copies. Kelly Clarkson would go on to be featured in a contest called World Idol, which was an offspring of all of the winners from the first season of Idol across the globe. She would come in second place behind singer Kurt Nilsen. From American Idol, she has gone on to become the best selling artist that got their start on the show.
After Idol
Although most people would agree that American Idol was the greatest break for Kelly Clarkson, some would say that she has tried to distance herself from the program in her next album called Breakaway where she would take on the tone of a more rock oriented singer. The album would go platinum in a short time although it did not sell very well at first. Even Rolling Stone would recognize Clarkson’s more rock oriented voice on this album when they did a short article on Breakaway. She would go on to tour throughout the world in cities across Europe, the United States, and Australia where she furthered gained the attention of audiences world wide.
In 2005, Clarkson would go on to win a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as Best Pop Vocal Album. The album would stay on charts for almost one hundred and three weeks and would be the tenth best selling album of 2006. The single called Because of You would be one of the most played songs on the radio of 2006 as well. She would perform a song for Ford Motor Company called Go, which was featured on a website for a free music download.
Ongoing Success
While touring through Europe, it is said the Clarkson began writing her own songs for her next album. Her next album would be called My December and would feature her next hit single Never Again, which would debut in April of 2007. The single would make it all the way to number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Pop 100. She would support these releases by her appearances on Good Morning America as well as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Although Clarkson had gained a solid fan base, she would end up canceling a summer tour because a lack of tickets sales and go on to reschedule where she would play more smaller venues so there would be not as many open seats.
Although she would distance herself from her start with American Idol, she would take on the role as a celebrity coach for the television show Canadian Idol and go on the same time to perform the national anthem at the 2007 NFL kickoff celebration. The album My December would produce another platinum certification for Clarkson as it sold millions of copies in the United States and worldwide.
