Joe Satriani
It really sucks when music is so perfect that you don't need to hear it anymore.
New York Born
In the little town of Westbury New York, no one thought that Joe Satriani would grow up to become one of the most heralded and acclaimed guitarists of all time. However, his ambition and persistence would take him to be rated as one of the greats and gain him many nominations for awards and prominence in the music industry.
Career
Joe Satriani would begin playing the guitar at the early age of fourteen years old, shortly after he heard that Jimi Hendrix had died. It was said that he quit his football team to play the guitar and would end up being influenced by greats such as Billy Bauer and pianist Lennie Tristano. He would go on to begin teaching guitar and ended up with a student by the name of Steve Vai, who would later go on to play with Satriani in many of his concerts.
During this time he would attend Five Towns College majoring in the field of music. Later in 1978, he would move himself to California to further his career and network with other musicians and would begin another music study at the Berklee School of Music. After graduating, he would go on to play with music legend Frank Zappa and a few other bands before embarking on his solo career.
Solo Start
Joe Satriani would begin a solo career in the early to mid 1980's although his career would not take off until one of his earlier students, Steve Vai, would mention Satriani in a magazine interview. Vai began playing with music great David Lee Roth in the early 1980's and this afforded him much acclaim during this time. In an interview with Guitar World, he would mention that he was a student of Satriani's, which would propel Joe's name throughout the music world.
Shortly there after, Satriani would get his first charted single with an all instrumental song. In 1989, he would release the album called Flying in a Blue Dream, which would gather steam and be used on movies as well as television shows. During this time, he began to solidify his growing fan base and would rocket himself into the 1990's with the release of his most successful commercial album called The Extremist.
With the release of this album, many radio stations picked up a single off the record called Summer Song. The song would gain high amounts of air play on the radio and was used by Sony in a television commercial.
Continued Success
From his growing popularity, Satriani would temporarily join the band Deep Purple to help them complete a tour through the country of Japan. The group wanted him to become a permanent member but he declined due to he fact that he had just signed a multi record contract with Sony Records. He would go on to produce a few more albums and in 1998 would release the record called Crystal Planet, which was said to be more an album that resembled his first solo works.
After that album, he would go on to experiment with what was later to be known as the electronica music genre with an album called Engines of Creation. He would follow up with a supporting tour for the album and would also film a DVD of some of his concerts, one at the ever so popular Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco. He would continue to release albums to the delight of his many fans. His devoted followers may be able to find some of his music available as free music downloads or for internet screening at a minimum.
