Joe was born as Joe Lewis Thomas in1972, on the 5th of July, in Columbus,
Georgia. Joe has been nominated seven times for a Grammy Award, one time for a BET award, Image Award one time and one time for Soul Train Awards. He has released eight studio albums, one compilation album and two Christmas albums, ranging from the years 1993 to 2009.
Early Years
Born to parents that are both ministers, he heard Gospel music all the time growing up. At the age of two he and his family moved to Alabama. He was very active in his church, he sang and played guitar then was the director of his church choir. In Alabama in late 1980's he played in some local bands. He ended up finally moving to New York City to work on a career in music.
Success
He met producer Vincent Herbert while he was singing in his church and working in a gospel music store. They recorded a three-track demo. In the year 1993, his debut album called, Everything was then released.The album produced several hits, with one of the singles I'm in Luv hitting number ten on the R&B hit list. Another song on that album, All the Things was used by the Wayans Brothers on their soundtrack for their film Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.
The Wayans Brothers also used several of Joe's songs for various movies over the years in their love scenes. In the year 1997, he signed a contract with Jive Records for his release of the album All That I Am. On the Billboard 200 the album reached number thirteen and on the R&B charts it reached number four. In the United States the album went platinum.
International Success
Helping him internationally, he appeared with Mariah Carey on the song Thank God I Found You, which is onMariah's Rainbow album. He joined with Kelly Price and Mariah Carey in 2002, for a remix of Mariah Carey's song Through the Rain from her album Charmbracelet. On a sampler for Jive Records he recorded a song called God's Work.
In the year 2000, he released his third and most successful album My Name Is Joe. It sold over three million copies and reached number two on the Billboard 200 and on the R&B album charts it reached the top. Stutterwhich is the third single off that album hit number one on R&B/Hip-Hop Tracks chart and the Billboard Hot 100.In 2001, the album Better Days was released and hit number four on the R&B charts and thirty-two in the Billboard 200. In 2003, his next album, And Then reached number four on the R&B charts and number twenty-six on the U.S. Album chart.
Big Name Collaborations
Ain't Nothin' Like Me was released on April 24, 2007 and has these artists appearing on it, Tony Yayo, Papoose, Young Buck, Fabulous, and Nas. The record Ain't Nothin' Like Me, has the producers, Sean Garrett, Cool & Dre, Tim & Bob, The Underdogs, and Bryan Micheal Cox. In the year 2007 he was a judge on the show Making the Band. For a Yahoo! Music exclusive he did a cover version of Carrie Underwood's hitBefore He Cheats for a Pepsi Smash. He changed the title to the song to Before I Cheat and the lyrics changed for a male's perspective.
New Label
Claiming that R. Kelly sabotaged his music career at the time they were both with Jive Records, Joe decided to leave the record label in 2007-2008. Told to EUR's Lee Bailey by Joe, " R. Kelly was very instrumental in making a lot of decisions when it came to my records being played on the radio. He would make a call to the radio station or to the label and say, 'Hey, this Joe record is too hot right now. Y'all need to pull that back.' And they would oblige."
R. Kelly and Joe did have singles and albums released about the same time with Jive Records. More & More,a hit single of Joe's, and hit number fifteen on the R&B charts was produced by R. Kelly. He eventually signed with Kedar Massenburg's Kedar Entertainment. He will release two new albums with them. He independently released two albums, one in 2008, September 23rd titled Joe Thomas, New Man, and the second one on the 14th of July, 2009 titled Signature in the United States and Japan.
