Jewel
“There were times when I was sitting in my van eating carrots and peanut butter, then I would be in New York eating a five course meal.” From Alaska to a living in a mini van, to selling millions of records worldwide, Jewel is known as a multi-platinum singer/songwriter, poet, and actress.
Before she became the world's Jewel
Jewel Kilcher was born in Payson, Utah, on May 23, 1974. Soon after, Jewel's family moved to Homer, Alaska, to her grandfather's 800 acre homestead. Jewel knew from a young age that she had a talent for singing and at age 6, she began performing with her parents for tourists in Anchorage. This is when she started to hone her talent of yodeling with the help of her father, who is of Swedish decent.
Jewel's parents also recognized the talents of her and her two brothers; encouraged them to create their own songs and perform in public. It was in 1989, when she had her first solo performance on the Tom Bodet's “End of The Road Show.” Jewel later attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she started writing her own songs and learned to play the guitar. After graduation, she and her brother Antz moved to San Diego and lived in their VW vans to save money.
Making It Big
She worked during the day as a waitress and played on the streets and at the local bars at night. It was here that she would meet Steve Poltz, who later co-wrote “You Were Meant For Me.” As her following grew, so her name travel and she was signed in 1993, to Atlantic Records. At the age of nineteen, she recorded and released her debut album, Pieces of You, which reached #4 on the Billboard 200 and was on the charts for two years.
With her hit singles, “Who Will Save Your Soul” and “Foolish Games,” the album went 11 times platinum ans sold more than 12 million copies in the U.S. In 1998, under new management, Jewel released her second album, Spirit. The album, which had a county music feel to it, also went platinum and reach #3 on the Billboard 200, with singles like “Hands” and “What's Simple Is True.”
In the next few years she released her third and fourth albums, Joy: A Holiday Collection and This Way, which both went on to sell more than 1 million records. Jewel later released 0304 and Alice In Wonderland albums that were a mixture of genres and received much criticism. These albums paled in comparison to her previous works.
Still trying to find her niche again, in 2008, Jewel released her first country album, Perfectly Clear. Following the success of this album, Jewel preformed a duet with Jason Micheal Carroll to record, “No Good In Goodbye.” And in 2009, she released her first independent album, Lullaby, which was a compilation of lullabies. Even though the album hit number one on the Top Children Songs the week of it's release, she didn't achieve the same success of her first albums.
