If I’m going to hell, I’m going there playing the piano.
Louisiana Born
Jerry Lee Lewis was born in the Louisiana Parrish of Concordia and would become one of the great cross categorical piano players of all time. He would begin playing piano with his cousins at a very young age. His parents were so supportive that it is said that they pulled a mortgage on their family farm to buy Jerry a piano. He would find his style from African American musicians of the day with rhythm and blues, gospel, country, and pop.
He would be enrolled at the Southwestern Assemblies of God University to further his piano playing on a road that would lead him to Jesus although young Jerry Lee had other ideas in mind. He would delight the students with a rockin’ version of My God is Real, which would end of getting him and the president of the student body kicked out of school. This would be the end of his religious music career, but the beginning of a long career in the professional music industry.
Career Start
Jerry Lee Lewis would travel to the musical city of Memphis Tennessee in 1956 to pursue his career and would audition for Sun Records Label creator Sam Phillips. He would go on to begin his solo career as well as stand in for others who needed a piano back up while recording at the Sun Records studio. When a surprise visit by Elvis Presley started a jam session between Presley, Lewis, and Perkins, the tape was left running and would be later released under the title called Million Dollar Quartet.
Lewis would begin his solo recordings in 1957 with his first hit single called Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On. He would then go on to record his greatest hit that is still played to this day called Great Balls of Fire. This song would not only propel him within the United States but also gain him international recognition. Some of these songs began getting criticism for his sexual undertones in his music by many music critics of the day. Ironically, it is said that even Lewis himself was also uncomfortable about the tone of his works. It was also said that he felt he may be leading both himself and his many fans to the depths of Hell.
Further Success
His fame was rising as was his ego. At one point, it was said that Lewis sat his piano on fire at the end of the show simply because he was put on the show after Chuck Berry. He was beginning to get the reputation as one who was out of control, which would do nothing but fuel his audiences and gain him much publicity. Scandal struck Lewis when it was learned that his wife was only thirteen years old. The reports followed him home to the United States and he was almost completely erased from the music industry.
However, Lewis would make a comeback first in Europe and then back in the United States. Interestingly, Lewis’ comeback would come from the country music industry. In the year of 1968, Lewis would release the single Another Place, Another Time would become a top ten hit in the country music community and this would lead to the song that would put him back on the top with a number one single called Make Love Sweeter For You.
Lewis has gone on to thrill his audiences with his unique style and was eventually inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.
