Indiana Born
Stemming from a family of singers and dancers, it should come as no surprise that Janet Jackson would become one of the most popular female dancers and singers of over three different decades. She was the youngest of nine children, many of whom were already performing before Jackson could even walk. Although coming from such a musical background, she was not thrilled at a career in the music industry and has later said that she actually wanted to race horses. Yet, after much coercing from her parents, she is one of the leading singers and dancers of the day.
Childhood Career
When turning seven years old in 1963, Janet began singing with her siblings on their show at the MGM Casino. She also began acting shortly after in the television show The Jacksons. From this show, she would make other appearances on television such as Good Times and Different Strokes. Her least favorite of these roles came in the television show called Fame. It was after her numerous appearances on television that Janet Jackson decided to focus more on singing instead of television and the big screen.
When Janet turned sixteen, her father was able to get her her first album production on A&M Records, which would be self titled Janet Jackson. The album would go on to make it to number six on the Billboard Hot R&B charts. Dream Street, would be the title of her next studio album and was released in 1980 although this album did not afford near the amount of sales as her previous debut album. After this album blunder, it was Janet’s decision to separate her music career from the rest of the family.
Further Career
After leaving the family, Janet would go on to produce her third album called Control, which had tracks such as Nasty, which would spawn from harassment that she received outside of her recording studio where she confronted men who were reportedly stalking her. The album would be a great success for Janet and would go on to award her four American Music Awards and would be nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. The album would go on to be certified multiple times platinum and would be her greatest success as of yet in her career. Her next album would be released in 1989 that was called Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814.
She produced this album to show the ever changing world of love and relationships although this was not what her record company wanted. The album would climb to number one. Along with love and relationships, the album would further address such social concerns as abuse, drugs, and other social issues of the day. She would embark on a world tour in support of the album where she would gain an international audience that would be the envy of any group or band of the day. She was heralded as a role model for any aspiring actress or singer that was up and coming as her words and lyrics showed a strong foundation in positive moral values.
Janet Jackson has gone on to release numerous albums over the last two decades, which have created even more hits with each release. Her fans cover the globe and delight in every appearance Jackson makes to their corner of the world. One can find some of her music possibly as free music downloads or at best internet screenings. She would create a music legacy that still propels her to the top of the charts even in the present and makes sold out appearance across the globe.
