Jamey Johnson

But when you go to write a song, you owe it to your listener to give them complete honesty, to tell them the full story in a way they can hear it, understand it and apply it to their life. If you can't do that, it's like peeing in your pants: You might get a warm feeling, but nobody else really cares to know.

The Early Years

An American country artist, Jamey Johnson was born and raised in Alabama. He grew up listening to Alabama and Alan Jackson and would some day cite them as his biggest influences. He spent two years at Jacksonville State University, then left school and joined the Marines. During that time, he wrote music and performed original songs for his colleagues in the services.

Upon leaving the Marines, Johnson began performing in local clubs and bars, and picked up his first gig opening for David Allan Coe. In 2000, he moved to Nashville to pursue his music career. Johnson met Greg Perkins, fiddle player for Tanya Tucker, who helped him record his first demo, and producer, Buddy Cannon, who helped him obtain his first writing contract.

Ladder to Success

In 2002, he released his first album, They Call Me Country, independent of a label. The release enjoyed some local fame, but faded fairly quickly. In 2006, Jamey Johnson, with a contract with BNA Records, released his next album, The Dollar. The title track had been released ahead of the album; the song reached #14 on the Billboard country charts in time for the release of the album, but ultimately was the only single on the album to chart. He was dropped by BNA Records when the album did not demonstrate more success commercially.

Johnson released his second album in 2008. That Lonesome Road was initially released only in digital form, available for purchase in the form of mp3 download; it was physically released in August of 2008 on the Mercury Nashville Records label. The single, In Color,
