Early Life and Joining the Army
Born in Wiltshire in England, James Blunt grew up in England, parts of Europe like Germany and even Cyprus as his father was in the army. It was natural that being encouraged by his father to join the British Army. James would later say that his choice of joining the army was so that army would finance his college education.
In 1999, Blunt served under NATO and was one of the first squadrons to arrive and take over Pristina Airport. During his time in the army, James Blunt would often play the guitar for his colleagues. Famously he tied the guitar to his tank during his time in Kosovo. By 2002, Blunt would leave the army after a 6 year service.
A Star is Born
Blunt started recording demos and passionately pursued his career in Music. In 2003 Linda Perry the lead singer-songwriter of 4 Non Blondes heard his demo and flew out to England to sign him to her newly launched Custard Records label. Blunt moved to LA and started recording his debut album "Back to Bedlam". The album produced by Tom Rothrock was released in Oct 2004. Since the artist was unknown, it did not attract widespread media attention. Blunt started touring the US, slowly picking up sizeable fans to every city he went.
There was often criticism of his inexperience in stage shows but Blunt was willing to learn. Interestingly the first single from the album was not "You are Beautiful" it was "High", which was not a hit on its initial release. In Mar 2005, he released "Wiseman" that was also not a huge hit. What followed next is as they say rock history. His third single was "that song", it debut at no.12 in the UK charts but skyrocketed to the top of the charts after nearly 6 weeks of release. The word had spread, a new star was born.
The single made rapid progress in the US as well, where it finally reached no.1 in 2006. Massive airplay from MTV and VH1 gave it global recognition. He even performed the song at 2007 Grammy awards and was nominated for the Song of the Year. It is a great melodic tune with acoustic guitar and very accessible lyrics.
The album has thus far sold an astonishing 12 million albums. And the single is one of the defining songs of the decade.
The Sophomore
After a global tour and phenomenal success which also saw him as an opening act for Elton John and appear on Sesame Street, it was time to record a new album. In the first part of 2007 James Blunt recorded his new album and released it in Sept of that year. Initial response was positive though the critical acclaim was divided. The album was a platinum selling success in the US and was only certified Gold.
In UK the album sold 2 million copies heavily based on the anticipation in the market. The single "1973" proved to be a smash hit. Globally the album ha not been able to match its predecessor selling only 4 million album world wid. James Blunt went on headlining world tour which was well received
James Blunt has made lasting impact with his first album and many continue to support his music and brush off any suggestions of a one hit wonder
