Imogen Heap

Inspiration hits me at the most annoying times. Like when I am on my bicycle going back home from the studio at 3 a.m.. I've many crackly recordings into my mobile phone practically inaudible from the wind rushing into the handset!

Getting Started

In 1996, British singer/songwriter, Imogen Heap, began singing with a band called Acacia.  It is with this band that she became acquainted with frontman, Guy Sigsworth, who would eventually be a noted collaborator on Heap’s recordings.  Her first solo performance was arranged by her manager, Mickey Modern, on the Prince’s Trust Tour, in which she performed four songs between performances by The Who and Eric Clapton.

Her debut solo album, iMegaphone, displayed lackluster sales, but was a critical success.  She drew comparisons to Kate Bush and Annie Lennox.  She toured aggressively in the United States, promoting the album and building a fan base.  After issues with her label, Almo Sounds regarding tracks for her next album, she was dropped and left with no label for over a year.

Dusting Herself Off

After losing her contract, the Japanese recording company, Aozoro Records re-released the album, and she toured again in 1999 to promote the effort.  While original copies of the album are rare, the tracks were later made available on iTunes for mp3 download.  In 2002, Imogen Heap collaborated with Guy Sigsworth and formed a short-lived duo they called Frou Frou.  The released an album, called Details, the singles of which enjoyed some success in the UK.

Heap was back in the studio, recording solo material shortly after and released Speak For Yourself in 2005.  With no backing from a commercial label, Heap wrote, recorded, and funded this effort personally.  The album reached #1 on the Billboard Heatseeking chart.  While commercial sales of the album were weak, her online presence made the album a success.  She released her first two singles online, making them available for download purchase, and kept fans updated on her blog and through Twitter.  Today she boasts three-quarters of a million Twitter followers.

What’s Next

Imogen Heap’s most recent album, Ellipse, was released in 2009.  The album was warmly and eagerly received, peaking at #1 on the US Electronic/Dance charts, and at #4 on the US rock charts.  The first two tracks were released to iTunes, for streaming or downloads prior to the album’s release.  She is currently on a world tour, supporting the album.

Imogen Heap has had a prolific career thus far, including nineteen guest appearances on other artists’ recordings, close to thirty contributions to compilation albums, including soundtracks for television series, including Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds.  Heap’s fan base is best measured by the vast following she has accrued on line.
