In 1987, while attending Phoenix Institute of Technology, Ice Cube and his friend formed a rap group called the C.I.A. The group began performing with Dr. Dre and later that year Ice Cube and Dr. Dre released My Posse. This EP caught the attention of Eazy-E, an budding West Coast rapper, and they all came together to form the group, Niggaz Wit Attitudes.
The group included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, the late Eazy-E, and DJ Yella. Ice Cube wrote the majority of the lyrics for the group's most successful album, Straight Outta Compton, which was released in 1988. After writing the rhymes for Eazy-E's solo album, the group began to have problems. He later left the group and the label; and the next two N.W.A. albums were directed solely at attacking him.
One Ice Cube
In 1990, Ice Cube released his debut solo album entitled, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, and established himself as a solo artist. Even though this album was a huge success, it was meet with much controversy and Ice Cube was accused of promoting racism, misogyny, anti-white views. In that same year, Ice Cube has he debut acting role in John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood as “Doughboy”. He also released Kill At Will, which was the first hip-hop EP to go Gold and Platinum all in the same year. In 1991, he released his follow up album, Death Certificate, that featured singles such as “No Vaseline,” and “Black Korea.” That following summer of 1992, Ice Cube toured with Lollapalooza and and released his third album, The Predator.
This LP was one of the first hip hop albums to debuted in the number one spot on both the R&B and pop charts. This album included the most popular of all Ice Cube's songs, “It Was a Good Day” and “Check Yo Self,” which helped the album sell more than 3 million copies in the U.S. alone. He went on to record Lethal Injection, War & Peace Volumes 1 and 2, Laugh Now Cry Later (2006), and Raw Footage (2008). This album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, as well as, number 5 an the Billboard 200 chart. Ice Cube released his latest album, I Am the West, released in early February of 2010.
More than a just a Gangsta
Ice Cube has been married to Kimberly Woodruff for more than 18 years and they have four children together. Sometime in the 1990's, amongst all of the controversy surrounding his music, Ice Cube converted to Muslim and has continued to practice his beliefs to this day. Aside from his rapping career, Ice Cube has also had parts in over 20 movies, over the years proving that he is an accomplished actor. Just to name a few: The Player's Club, Anaconda co-starring with Jennifer Lopez, Higher Learning, the hit comedy, Friday starring the famous Chris Tucker and his lastest film, Lottery Ticket.
