Getting Started
Chris Dooley, Jr., better known by his stage name, Hurricane Chris, is a rapper from Shreveport, Louisiana. He started rapping when he was only nine years old, demonstrating a talent for rapping fast and articulately. He recorded mixtapes with other rappers in the area and was beginning to attract local attention, as a member of the Shreveport ratchet ratchet movement, the name for the Shreveport crunk or hyphy movement.
In 2007, at eighteen years old, Hurricane Chris released his first album, 51/50 Ratchet. The album was extremely successful, selling 26,000 copies in the first week of release. The success was due, in part, to the massive success of his initial single, A Bay Bay. The album peaked at #2 on the rap charts.
Picking up Momentum
Hurricane Chris became an overnight sensation of sorts thanks to the popularity of A Bay Bay. The single debuted at #95, but quickly rose to #7 on the rap charts. The video was rated #3 on BET's Top 100 videos for 2007. Remixes of the single have been recorded by artists like The Game, Lil Boosie, Birdman, Angie Locc, Jadakiss, and E-40. Rappers Chingo Bling and Pitbull recorded their own version of the song, entitled Aye Wey Wey.
His second release was Unleashed, made available on CD and digitally. A bonus track is available to fans who purchase the album on line and download it in mp3 format. Released in 2007, the album included the single, Halle Berry (She's Fine), which climbed to #7 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. The single featured rapper Superstarr.
Here and Now
Unleashed came out late in 2009, so he is currently still working to promote the album. His second single, Headboard, which peaked at #63. The single features Mario and Plies, and, according to Hurricane Chris, was entirely Freestyled. Hurricane Chris has also been recording mixtapes with fellow rappers. These can be streamed at his website.
In an interview, he indicated that he is currently recording material for his next album. It is very important to him that his fans know that he is not going to enjoy commercial sales on a couple of hits, then disappear.
Did you know . . .
He chose the stage name, Hurricane Chris, because he is known for his ability to rap very fast, “like a hurricane.”
When he recorded Halle Berry (She's Fine), his lawyers wanted him to change the song to Ms. Berry (She's Fine). Instead, Hurricane Chris contacted Halle Berry and asked her permission to base the song on her. She endorsed the single, so the name of the song remained.
The voice at the beginning of A Bay Bay is rapper 3 Feet's son, Baby 3.
