Hoobastank
When you can’t give one fan the attention they expect, they hate you and call you an asshole. It wasn’t in my job description to come to the fan’s houses and play Nintendo with them.
California
The group Hoobastank would form in 1994 in the hills of California and would come together from a high school battle of the bands contest. The would recruit other members to form a full group. They would go on to start playing local venues and bars around the Los Angeles County area with other bands of the day such as Incubus and 311. The would go on to release their first album called They Sure Don’t Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To. The album and their touring around southern California had developed a solid fan base for the group and would gain the attention of the Island Records executives.
First Albums
The group would go on to release their first self titled album Hoobastank in November of 2001. Their first single off of the album was called Crawling In the Dark and was considered a breakthrough for the band that went to number sixty eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The release of the second single off the album was even better and would go on to reach number forty four on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as number two on the Modern Rock Chart. The title of the single was Running Away and the album would eventually go platinum.
Although the album was very well received by many audiences, critics had a different view and did not reward the band with much acclaim. In support of the album, the group would go on an extensive tour throughout Europe and Asia where it would sell numerous copies on those continents as well. Due to the success of the album and its reception by audiences world wide, the group was asked to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group would go back into the studio to work on their next album.
Growing Success
The group Hoobastank would go back to the studio to release their second album titled The Reason, which was released in 2003. The single Same Direction would make it to number nine on the Modern Rock charts in the United States and also make it to the modern rock charts worldwide. The band would then go on to release a DVD of a collection of all of their music videos. After touring again through the U.S. as well as Europe, the band would take some time off before they would go on to release their next album.
However, fans did not have to wait too long and the album titled Every Man for Himself was released in May of 2006 and would go directly to the number twelve position of the Billboard 200 charts. There were three singles that would chart; however, they did not chart very well and for the first time since their inception, the group started to see some waning of their success. Although the album did not bode very well, it would still go on to sell enough albums to be certified gold.
It is rumored that when the group went on tour with Velvet Revolver, they would receive not so great receptions, which stemmed from a supposed feud with Velvet Revolver’s frontman Scott Weiland although it would later be said that these rumors were untrue.
Delays and Release
The release of their next album went through many delays before it was released. The album was constantly being said to be nearly finished as reported on the bands website but would not come out until January of 2009. The album would be called For(N)Ever. The song My Turn would be featured on the TNA Wrestling pay per view event.
Did You Know
The name of the band has been said to a mispronunciation of a gas station in Germany.
