The Early Years
Hezekiah Xzavier Walker, Jr. was born in 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1985, his was traveling and performing with the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, a Grammy Award-winning gospel ensemble. He became passionate about preaching the Word of God and reaching those who needed guidance, and, with the help of church leaders with whom the Choir was associated, he became an ordained pastor.
In 1987, Hezekiah Walker launched his solo music career, as part of his ministry. His debut album was entitled I'll Make It (Sweet Rain), and was followed by ten more albums throughout the 1990s. Walker founded the Love Fellowship Tabernacle in 1994 in the East New York section of Brooklyn. He dedicated his time and talents to reaching out to the youth of New York, and in 1995, Peter Jennings of ABC World New Tonight covered a story about the 30% drop in crime in that are which had occurred since the opening of Walker's ministry.
An Entity
The success of the Tabernacle led Walker to open a second location in Willingboro, New Jersey in 1998; by 2000, the congregation had grown to a point that it moved to a larger facility in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, to accommodate all who wished to attend. In 2003, Walker was elevated to Church Overseer and in 2008, he was made Bishop.
Six more albums in the through 2008 extolled his love of the Savior in a gospel format that could be enjoyed and appreciated by youth as well as adults. His solo albums have always touted him to be Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir. In 2005, they became Hezekiah Walker and The LFC. His 1994 and 2001 releases earned him Grammy Awards. Separate from this choir, Walker has released two live albums with the Love Fellowship Tabernacle (LFT) in 1998 and 2001.
What's Next
With four albums on the Billboard R&B/rap charts and the Billboard Top 200, Walker proves that he has successfully reached the masses with his message. Nielsen Soundscan has also noted a rise in digital sales in gospel music overall, indicating a move toward mainstream for the genre. Walker, himself, remains in the top ten gospel artists in mp3 download purchases.
Hezekiah Walker remains active in his ministry through music and preaching. He has published one book in 2003, entitled Destiny: Dream It, Declare It, Do It. He also hosts a radio show on the 24-hour gospel station, 1190 WLIB, weekdays 2 to 7.
Did you know . . .
In February of 2010, Walker held a prayer vigil in Times Square, for the earthquake victims in Haiti. Thousands were in attendance, and guest speakers included Joel Osteen, Donnie McClurken, and Bishop Pierre Dorcilian of Port Au Prince, Haiti.
In 2001, Walker released an album with Sean “Puffy” Combs, entitled Thank You. Appearances on the album included Faith Evans, Brandy, and Mario Winans.
Walker's Love Fellowship Tabernacle now has locations in South Africa as well as the United States.
