The Broadway Star

Heather Headley's voice is of an angel, the soulful voice with the perfect high notes have given her the phenomenally successful Broadway and music career. She has worked with the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (the producing duo who worked with Janet Jackson), Shaggy and Babyface.

She made her name as a Broadway star by first playing Nala on the Lion King Musical and then going to to perform the role of Aida. It was Elton John/Tim Rice who were interested to recruit her because of her voice and stage presence. Heather would go on to make to successful pop albums for major record label RCA and win Grammy in 2010 for her 09 gospel album for Audience of One. Her two pop albums are certified Gold in the US.

The second album even topping the RnB charts. Heather has also sung Elton John compositions such as You Song. Unlike other pop contemporary artists, Heather's image is not about sexy and wear revealing clothes, but in fact it is a polite and smart demeanor which have given her immense acclaim

The Caribbean Connection

Heather Headley was born in Trinidad and Tobago. At a very early age she started playing music like reggae and calypso. But as she has always said her first love was gospel music. Since her father was a pastor she would spend a lot of time in churches which would not only influence her music style but her attitude towards life.

She was a part of many choirs which molded her vocals and in 1989 along with the family she moved Indiana in the US. She would focus on her education but also her music and especially her singing. She left college to be a part of the musical Ragtime.

In love the Broadway

Ragtime gave her the breakthrough which she had been looking for. In 1997, she auditioned and got the part of Nala on the The Lion King Broadway musical which was composed by Elton John/Tim Rice. The character of Nala was that of Simba's childhood friend and eventual soul mate.

During the Broadway performance Heather got to sing one of Elton John's classic love song - "Can you feel the love Tonight" and "Circle of Life". She was the original cast member and gained a lot critical acclaim for her performance. After a two year run, she was cast as the lead of the legendary musical Aida; this was another Elton John/Tim Rice creation.

The lead role of Aida was a dream come true for Heather. And her crowning glory moment came when she won the coveted Tony Award for her portrayal of the protagonist in 2000. She also won the Drama Desks Outstanding Actress in a musical. That year she was listed among the most beautiful woman on People magazine

The Pop Career

In 2002 she made her debut as a pop diva with her album "This is Who I am" a gold selling record in the US. The album was well received and she was nominated for several Grammies including the prestigious Best New Artist. Its peak position was No. 38 in the US. The album production gave it a fun - dance feel and songs like "He is" were special. In 2004 she received fantastic review for her rendition of Elton John classic "Your Song".

Her second album has been considered by many as her best thus far. The album titled "In My Mind" was a much more mature display in songwriting and musical style. Released in Jan 2006, it debut No.5 in the US charts and is her second gold certified album.

The elegance in her and the simple production gave the album its freshness and progression from the predecessor. The song "How Many Ways" is a little naughty in the lyrics department. In the 2007 Christmas TV special she sang " Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

Her third album "The Audience of One" is a Grammy award winning effort. This was always her first love and she has even decided to go to churches all across America to promote the album, and sing the music. The album is in fact cover versions of popular gospel songs.

Heather Headley along with Josh Groban sang "My Country, Tis for Thee" at Lincoln Memorial for the We Are One: The Obama inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial in front of 400,000 people and of course the President Elect and his family. She has always considered this the proudest moment of her life.

Heather Headley is quite respected as a Diva. Her operatic voice and charming demeanor is quite unique in an era where the value of good singing and song writing is dying
