Goo Goo Dolls

If I had an hour glass…I’d save the grains of time I spent with you.

City of Buffalo

In the border city of Buffalo, New York, John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and George Tutuska came together to form the band called the Goo Goo Dolls in a garage outside of the city in 1986. The group would release numerous records on go on to play with industry greats spanning over two decades.

First Release

The group the Goo Goo Dolls would release their first album that was self titled called Goo Goo Dolls in 1987 under the record label of Mercenary Records. The album would get some airplay on local radio stations but not very much and mostly sold to their local fans they had gathered while playing college hot spots and clubs. Since the first album did not receive much acclaim, the group decided to give it another and would release their second studio album called Jed, in the year of 1989 after moving to L.A. to further their music career.

Like the first album, this would receive little recognition in the music industry; however, the band would not be deterred and went back into the studio to release their third album called Hold Me Up. This album would have Rzeznick singing lead vocals and would have a single to get picked up two years later to be released on the soundtrack for the movie Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Further Albums

In 1993, the Goo Goo Dolls would release their fourth album called Superstar Car Wash and would finally begin getting some attention in the press. The band was able to incorporate more sounds and a bigger budget due to their last album gaining some ground. The group would produce a music video for the single We Are the Normal and would get picked up by MTV’s show called the 120 Minutes. The track Fallin’ Down would also go on the soundtrack to the movie Son In Law, which featured Pauley Shore.

This album, with heavy touring, allowed the band more mainstream attention and their music career began to gather steam. The group would release their fifth album called A Boy Named Goo, which would prove to be their best album as of yet although it still sold rather short in the stores. However, with the release of the single called Name, the band would become successful and the album would go double platinum.

However, the group had to sue Metal Blade Records to get any money for this album and would end up signing with Warner Brothers Records. They would then release their next album called Dizzy Up the Girl in 1998. This album would be completely commercial as the band chose to push for this route due to the success of their last album.

Winding UP

The group had gained the attention of the mainstream rock n’ roll audiences and they would go on to release a song for the movie City of Angels. The song would be their biggest breakthrough and stay on music charts for a total of eighteen weeks and would also get them three Grammy nominations that year. The album would also be a huge success for the group where it would eventually go triple platinum.

The group would continue playing for their new found fans from their previous hits and would go on to release numerous more albums; however, none quite garnered the success as their late 1990’s releases. More history on the band can be found on their official website as well as information concerning up coming tour dates and what else that the band has in store for its many fans. Some of their music may be available on the internet as free music downloads or at minimum for internet screening.
