Early Life

Ginuwine was born Elgin Baylor in Washington DC in 1975. In 1994, he graduated from high school while always showing a flair for music. He pursued his college and passed out of a community college in Maryland. While in college he wanted to explore music as a career despite having a paralegal associate degree.

He broke into the music scene by appearing on one of Jodeci's videos. During the same time he met Missy Elliot and producer/rapper Timbaland. Along with the latter he would start a friendship that has lasted till this day. It is the combination of his smooth traditional vocals and Timbaland's production style that by 1996 they already had a hit on their hands. The single "Pony" from his first album for Epic Record album received a lot of attention. The first album is credited of moving the hip/hop sound to a more traditional pop setting. Ginuwine covered the Prince classic "When Doves Cry". The album peaked at No. 26 on the US Billboard Album charts eventually selling 2 million copies.

The Sophomore

The second album "100%Ginuwine" released in 1999 was one of his highest charting albums at No.3 on the US album charts and No.2 on the RnB charts. The production by Timbaland again was a natural progression from the first album. The album featured "Final Warning" with Aaliyah but failed to chart any major singles. The reviews were positive especially towards the production of the album by Timbaland. The album was his second 2 million seller.

However, this is also a period where Ginuwine and Timbaland started to drift apart as friends and colleagues. He roped in R.Kelly to helm the production, Timbaland would return later.
