Ghostface Killah – The Wu Tang Rapper

“Sometimes it change for the better, sometimes it change for the worse. Everything I try ain't always a bomb. It's like basketball: One day you might hit your threes, next day you might get two points and that's just how it is.”- Ghostface Killah

The Wu Tang Dude

Ghostface Killah was born Dennis Coles in a State Island housing project. He started rapping at a very age and was friends with The RZA. The two of them would put together The Wu Tang Clan. In 1993 Killah would actually help in recruiting the other members and would also executive produce their first big album “Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)”. He continued his association with Wu Tang Clan members by collaborating with them on their albums.

The Solo Career

Ghostface Killah had received a lot of attention due to his association with the Wu Tang Clan and signed with Razor Sharp Records to release his first album. “Ironman” released in Oct 1996 was a massive hit. The album also received critical appraise from the music press at large for its difference from the Wu Tang Clan’s themes. The album’s music was about sex, politics and even an open reference to a Muslim sect in Harlem. The album reached No.2 on the US charts and No.1 on the RnB charts. It has been certified platinum.

Ghostface Killah released his follow-up album in 2000 called “Supreme Clientele”, debuting at No. 2 on the RnB charts and No.7 on the US Billboard charts. The album would go on to sell 500,000 copies.

The Def Jam Connection

He quickly moved into the recording studio to release his third album “Bulletproof Wallets”. Despite the fact that it reached No.2 on the RnB charts, the album received mixed reviews and was considered a commercial disappointment.

He dropped his “Killah” name and signed with Island-Def Jam Records in 2003.  The debut Def Jam record “The Pretty Tony Album” did not feature any collaboration with Wu Tang Clan members for the very first time, instead, he worked with label mates Missy Elliot.  The single “Tush” became a minor hit. The 2006 “Fishscale” was a return to commercial success as it produced the single “Back Like That” with rap super star Ne-Yo.  The album debut at No 4 on the US Billboard charts. His next album “More Fish” received positive reviews and is considered as among his strongest ever albums. The 17-track set failed to reach Gold status.

“The Big Doe Rehab” saw a return of his Wu Tang Clan mates. The album did receive good reviews but failed to reach commercial success. His last album in 2009 “Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City” featured collaboration with rappers like Lloyd and Ne-Yo
