Georg Strait - His Early Years

George was born in Texas on May 18, 1952. His dad was a high school teacher and his mother left him when he was in third grade. The talented singer grew up on his family's cattle ranch outside of Big Wells, Texas.

He became hooked on music when he was in high school, where he was a member of a rock band. Country music lured him by her charm and he found his genre. The classics by Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills and Hank Williams, made him addicted to this type of genre. The singer attended Southwest Texas State University after his graduation, but then dropped out and left for Mexico with his high school lady-love Norma.

George enlisted in the US Army in 1971, after which he was honorably discharged and returned to his university studies. He completed his degree in agriculture in 1979.

The Beginning

George used to play clubs in Houston with the Ace in the Hole Band and afterwards, he became a friend of Erv Woolsey. Quickly, George entered the world of MCA Records and signed a contract, keeping The Ace in the Hole Band as his back up band. He released his first single in 1981 titled "Unwound". This became his first Top Ten track.

His first album "Strait Country" was released the same year which had his other two singles "Down and Out" and "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger". He amassed 17 No.1 singles throughout the 1980's.

George Strait released many chart toppers and as time passed by, country music evolved and was crossing over to the pop music charts. Artists like Garth Brooks began to dominate the airwaves on pop stations. George knew his music and understood the soul of his country roots. When many other country artists's struggled, George thrived with his popular albums like "Livin' it Up", "Chill of an Early Fall", "Holding My Own", "Easy Come Easy Go", "Lead On".

By the end of 1990's he had released 31 number one hits. He and Alan Jackson reincarnated the traditional country music at the 1999 Country Music Awards with the performance of "Murder of Music Row" which was later released as a single and made it to number 38 on the Billboard Country chart.

New Millennium

George Straight had taken the road less traveled and that had successfully seen him crowned as the King of Country music. The new millennium saw the release of another 7 hit albums, "George Strait", "The Road Less Traveled", "Honkytonkville", "Somewhere Down in Texas", "It Just Comes Natural", "Troubadour" and his latest release "Twang."

In 2002, he released his 50th number one single "She'll Leave You with a Smile". His chronicles proved his extensive career in the hit packages called "50 Number Ones". 2009 saw the release of his new album "Twang", which was released this year on August 11th. This album is already certified gold, and he ranks right at the top for having the most albums sold in any genre, only bested by Elvis and the Beatles.
