George Jones

Country music to me is heartfelt music that speaks to the common man. It is about real life stories with rather simple melodies that the average person can follow. Country music should speak directly and simply about the highs and lows of life. Something that anyone can relate to.

The Early Years

George Glenn Jones was born in Texas in 1931, He was exposed to music early in life from listening to his parents' records and listening to gospel music in church. When he was sixteen years old, he quit school and left for Jasper, Texas, where he worked singing in bars and clubs. He got married while still a teen, but the marriage did not last a year.

In 1954, he married his second wife, Shirley Ann Corley, and continued to perform. George Jones released his debut album, Grand Ole Opry's New Star on the Starday Records' label, in 1957. His long-time hit, Why Baby Why, was included on the album. Billboard named him Most Promising New Artist. Despite the title of the album, he did not join the Grand Ole Opry until 1969.

A Prolific Career

Jones released fourteen more albums through the end of 1964, the last two of which hit the Top Ten Country charts. In 1962 and 1963 he was named Male Vocalist of the Year by five different organizations, including Billboard and Cash Box. Also during this time he collaborated with Melba Montgomery on three of her albums, and released The Best of George Jones. Among his many releases were #1 hits, White Lightning, Tender Years, and She Thinks I Still Care.

The rest of the decade saw thirteen more albums; his 1966 release, I Am People, peaked at #1 on the Country chart, and Walk Through This World With Me, 1967, went to #2. His single, Walk Through This World With Me, peaked at #1 on the country charts. In 1968, he divorced Shirley and married country star Tammy Wynette in 1969. He went on to release nineteen more studio albums, his last release in 2006.

Present and Future

In 2008, he was even honored at the Kennedy Center Awards in Washington, D.C. He divorced Tammy Wynette in 1975, marrying Nancy Sepulveda in 1983; he and Nancy are still married. He was a part of twenty-six collaborative albums including 2006's God's Country: George Jones and Friends, which featured a number of country artists, including Vince Gill, Joe Diffe, and Tracey Lawrence.

George Jones is currently on tour, playing theaters and casinos across the United States. Some of his albums, including 1993's High Tech Redneck, are available on iTunes for mp3 download or for free streaming. There are still blocks of music from his repertoire that are not available at all due to law suits and recording disputes.
